I tried this some time ago and my recollection is that the machines don't talk to each other. This coincides with the statements in the PV-HD1000 user manual. The technical explanation is that the PV-HD1000 uses a lower data rate, different packet format, and different command set.
An analogy is that the IEEE1394 is a like a hose. You send many different fluids through a hose, the usage depends on the equipment at either end of the hose. Same with the 1394 connection; many different formats and speeds of data are possible depending upon the equipment at either end.
