Good Guys www.goodguys.com, a retailer in California, Nevada, and Washington has PVHD1000 demo units in some stores at considerable discount. They are floor models but this may be all you can get at this point. Picked one up for $599 missing the remote and firewire cable. Look on the web site for store locations and start calling. I'm not sure they will ship but it's worth a try.

Fry's has the cables but like most things at Fry's you need to look carefully. Don't ask, they will probably hand you a printer cable and tell it will work. Firewire comes in two versions 4 & 6pin. 6pin just has power included to operate small interfaces. Also try other computer supply houses.

Why would they do that? Does Panasonic have orders to retailers not to sell anymore of these period. More evidence that these old boxes cannot be copy protected? Wishfull thinking?

I grabbed all the demo PVHD1000's and TU-DST51's I could get from the Bernies chain in Connecticut / Mass last month. The manager said that Panasonic tried to block the sale to me and wanted them back, but he told them it was too late. I suspect the fewer the number of units that are sold to consumers, the smaller their legal liability will be re: their Hollywood suit.

I'm afraid I misled you. I was merely parroting the informally reported situation without actually doing my own research (which I just attempted). If there is an actual legal action pending, I cannot confirm it at this time without access to a legal search engine. The part re: the Panasonic rep trying to get them back is first-hand, however.

As of 10/28 there is a PVHD1000 sitting on the demo shelf at Fry's in Woodland Hills CA. 818 area code.

As of 10/16 Good Guys in Glendale CA, 818 area code, has (had?) a demo PVHD1000 at $720 before any attempted negotiation. 818

Look up stores on the web site and just start calling. I checked with the corporate office when I was looking and they can't (or won't) verify inventory in the individule stores.

If you also need the DSTU50/51 - good luck. I have not seen even a demo tuner available for months.

I know where there is a DST50 virgin demo at the obscene price of $1499. Think this is worth buying as an investment? Not me! I already got mine. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's still possible that some Best Buy stores have the TU-DST51.
I got mine in Boca Raton Florida BB and there was one left still,
but that was early summer.

Don,
Have you ever thought about a second unit for use as a spare in case yours goes poof? I have the DST51 which was a new, unopened box item ( In June) at a local store here which has a year warranty. I worry that if it dies, then no more recording/playback capabilties. I bet that when the warranty is up and if it dies, all I will get is the HDS20 or whatever Panasonic has out next year but with no firewire.
Thats the only problem with the Panny combo+Dish 5000 setup. 4 single points of failure and all items are out of production.

Bye the way, since we are telling where we are seeing these, my local A/V store has 3 DST50's and 2 DST51's. Also, BB in Annapolis has 1 demo DST50.
Joe

We all have our own little ways of dealing with the obsolescence issue. I am banking on new product out as soon as the HDTV begins to increase in popularity in 2-3 years. In the meantime, I am taking preventive measures such as cooling fan on the hardware to cut heat aging of the electronics.

If I find a deal around I'll pick it up but I'm not going to spend twice what I originally did to have a backup. Believe it or not, there is more to life than recording HDTV, at least there is for me.

Now, in 3 to 4 years if the Pany goes kaput, with nothing else to replace it and is beyond repair, I'll buy one of those HDCAMS or a D5 or a DVCPRO HD with associated signal hardware and thumb my nose at the MPAA! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

UPDATE!!! I was in a Good Guys this weekend and saw a PVHD1000 and TUSD50 sitting atop a big screen. Asked and they were both for sale on clearence. Note that when I called this store a month ago they said they didn't have any, even demos. The sales person told me sometimes the floor models are not listed in store inventory although they are supposed to be. So it looks like you have to be persistant when calling stores. I guess with the clearence price the sales people aren't motivated to look due to the low commision.

Dear WhiteyJ,

Thanks for posting this info. If anyone has bought from those
stores in the meantime, please post so we know not to call them.

Also--If I have a remote for a TU-DST50, does that same remote
work with the PV-HD1000 or is it a different one?

Best, Marv

No it doesn't have some needed features. There is no way to put the PVHD1000 into firewire mode without the remote. At least I couldn't find one.
