It is simply a supply and demand issue. If Dishdepot still had the modulator for $199, things would be different.

I bought the modulator about 10 weeks ago from Empire Satellite ($319 total) after having much difficulty locating one. I do not know if they currently have any in stock. The link to the modulator is:

Now that I have my HiPix working with some degree of stability (see my post in HTPC forum regarding version 2.2 beta test results), I have really gotten hooked on HDTV time shifting. I leave my PC on 24x7 (system crashes aside!), and at the start of every week (or after every system crash!) just enter which programs I want recorded. Aside from the frequent system crashes which occur mostly on play back, and intermittent stuttering (every 5-10 minutes) the system works OK. I now have more HD OTA content than I care to watch!

But the real reason I got HDTV was for movies! Since the networks are not showing many good movies in HD these days (I do not include made for TV estrogen packed movies in the 'good' category), I am thinking of getting a Dish 5000 with Modulator for HBO/SHO recording.

I tried DishDepot, and while they have 5000s at a good price, they are sold out of the modulators. I know neither the 5000 or Modulators are in production any more, but does anyone know of other sources? I have also tried ebay, but was surprised that the prices on ebay are much HIGHER than the prices on DishDepot. For example, DishDepot has the 5000 for $299, and on ebay the actual sales prices for the past month average $350 or more!

Any ideas on other sources??

apparently, they are all sold out. i emailed them a couple of days ago re: the HDTV modulator for the 5000, and got the following reply:

Hello.

Unfortunately we are completely out of stock and they no longer
manufacture this modulator.

Sorry but thank you for your inquiry.

Note that the latest Dish 5000 update is working only sporadically with the HDTV modulator. See the hardware forum!!
