This may be a stupid question, but I'm wondering if it can be done. My Tosh TW40X81 only supports 1080i & 480p, so I've been watching 720p shows (from ABC) in 480p on my TV.

I'm in the process of selling my RCA DTC100, which upconverts 720p to 1080i, so I'm wondering if there's a way to send my Panny HD1000's 720p signal to it (via the Panny DST51) to enjoy upconverted 1080i on my TV.

Months ago there was an exchange among skeptics on the recording Forum and it was established that some subset of the Panasonic STBs (I don't recall whether it was the TU-DST50 or the TU-DST51) will convert a native 720p recording to 1080i when the STB's output switch is in the "1080i/480p" position. Many (most?) units behave the same as yours and downconvert 720p to 480p, but a credible source (someone using it for a broadcast application) insisted that he owned units that converted to 1080i.

This raises the possibility that an engineering mod could add this capability to any of our units.

I couldn't find this in a few minutes spent searching the archives, but I'm not as motivated as (perhaps) you might be. My system can handle native 720p so it's a less pressing issue for me.

AVS member Glimmie said his employer had a number of TU-DST50's that converted 720p to 1080i, but these were special units not avalable to the public.

I called Panasonic to see if this was possible and was told a flat no.

I would love to get one of these units.

Barjesh,

Welcome back! Your solution is simple. Buy the cheapest component to RGB converter. Then hook it up to PC moniter.

Not so fast. I have the DST50 and a Sony G70 with RGB input. I bought the Extron CVC200 to convert the STB component output to RGB, but the projector doesn't accept 480p. So now I bought a IFB1400 Interface Board which accepts 480p. I'll use this to feed a progressive DVD player and the STB. You quickly find out that HD becomes an expensive hobby.

sr:

I also have a G70, and it handles YPrPb component from a TU-DST50 or progressive DVD just fine. The G70 even has pre-configured input memories for HDTV formats.

I'm pretty certain that all G70s are the same in this respect, and that you didn't require any/either additional investment (unless you needed a second input for some reason).

I use the 5 bnc RGBHV input via an Extron switcher for:
- RCA STB
- DVDO line doubler (which accepts S-VHS input)
- Extron CVC200 (which converts the component output from the DST50 to RGBHV)
If you also want to feed a 480p component source from a progressive DVD player into the same 5 bnc input, you have to go through several menu changes to accomplish this. That's why I am buying the IFB1400 interface board and plugging it into the B side of the projector. This will allow easy selection of the 480p signal.

Even with this setup, my DST50 will output 480p when I select the PBS channel, and the projector displays a pink image when this happens. Then I have to go through the menu to tell the projector to switch input format. Since I rarely watch the PBS cahnnel, I think it's the best solution for auto switching the active inputs.
