There is an interesting blub in the monst recent issue of Multichannel news. Read the last paragraph.

"DirecTV Touts PVR Offer:

Staff
Multichannel News
5/21/01

El Segundo, Calif.— DirecTV Inc. today (May 21) will take the wraps off a new promotional offer for subscribers who want to upgrade to receivers with built-in personal video recorders.

Customers who purchase a TiVo Inc.-enabled direct- broadcast satellite receiver will be eligible for free installation and a complimentary upgrade to any necessary outdoor hardware (such as a two-feed, dual-LNB), as well as a multi-switch that would allow viewers hook up their original set-top box in another room.

A similar offer starts Wednesday (May 23) for DirecTV boxes with built-in UltimateTV technology.

DirecTV last week ran teaser ads for the special offer on channels 223 and 224. The company plans to devote separate on-air informational channels to each of the two promotions.

The LNB upgrades are necessary for customers who want to take advantage of the PVRs' two-tuner capabilities, which let them watch one show while recording another.

EchoStar Communications Corp. chairman Charlie Ergen last week confirmed his company's plans to introduce a two-tuner PVR later this year. The company is also developing a PVR that would record high-definition television signals, Ergen told the audience of his monthly on-air Charlie Chat last Monday."

Hmmm, wonder what the result of that will do for us?

Does that mean that no one can produce a DVR without giving TIVO royalties?

If it also comes equipped with a DTV tuner, I'll order it right now, sight unseen.

That is the way it seems. Maybe Dish will now do a DishTiVo.

Dishplayer came after TiVo and RePlay, but before DirecTiVo. It was however more of a DVR than a PVR (i.e. it just acted like a digital VCR, didn't have the show tracking and suggestions like the TiVo). Even so, the TiVo is a much more feature rich product and is more fully developed than either the Dishplayer or the 501.

While Dish was first in the integrated space, DirecTv has a broader range of products with more functionality. That is why I'd love to see a DishTiVo. They can continue to sell the 501, but just offer other options as well.

What's the story with the Zenith HD PVR? Wasn't it supposed to be out in late 2001?

Zenith just announced a shift of marketing & product priority to a "digital" brand overhaul. See the link below.

I would think they will strive to be the first on the market with a DirecTV/DTV/HDTV/PVR.

Editorial comment: I think they have a good shot at really "hitting one out of the park" with this product. My best guess is that this may be the "Wonder Box" we have all been waiting for. All the pieces are in place for this to happen. I hope.

A few a of the details regarding the DISH HD PVR can be found by checking out the link below. The thread is long but includes all available information about this new HD PVR receiver including that it will be called the 921 model and that it will include whole house networking. The link also provides a lot of information from the 2001 DISH Network Team Summit including links to many pictures from the summit.

The thread indicated that the HD Dish is about a year away.
