499 HDVR-100 add-in
199 DVHS play/transcode option
99 installation
149 1 year warranty/upgrades option
-200 payment by Jan. 9, 2001
54 2 day shipping

TOTAL: $800

I submitted my payment on January 4, so I just celebrated my 6 month anniversary with 169Time. I wonder when my 1 year warranty/upgrades option expires? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Unfortunately I got into this trainwreck before PayPal was a payment option; I submitted a check. Can you say, "I'm screwed" ?

-Dylan

P.S.: Luckily I didn't go wild buying up DV equipment in anticipation. Also, I've been taping with the Dish/Panasonic combo for over a year, and I just scored a backup TU-DST50 for $239! So at least I have one way to tape HD.

Next year's Super Bowl won't be in HD. Could it be the Super Bowl in 2003?

I'm also on the moron list; I just don't like to talk about it. I suspect that's true of others. I ordered one board with installation plus upgrade option, D-VHS recording and playback option, D-VHS test pattern tape, FireWire cable, and 3-day shipping. I sent a cheque in time for the original early-order deadline in January.

Let me add my perspective (as an engineering director in a small company). So far, the amount that has been listed as having been paid to 169time comes to around $5000.

In Florida, an engineer, (software or hardware) would make at least $25 per hour. Fringe benefits (social security, insurance etc) raises the cost to at least $40 per hour. That means that the $5000 would pay for only one employee for just over 3 weeks.

This is a very generous calculation since it doesn't count utilitites, computers, development software, test equipment or office space. California salaries may be higher too.

Even if there are others who have paid, but are silent, these pre-payments could only be a small fraction of the development costs. Andy has had to design hardware, design a pc bord, build and test hardware, and develop software.

That leads me to wonder about the 169time business model. The number of units they need to sell to break even could be quite large. I wonder who they plan to sell to. It must be more than this AV Science group.

I would really like them to suceed since I would like one of these units too. However, for them to suceed, they needs a large amount of up front capital, and I don't see pre-payments being a realistic source of this.

I share George's point of view. I know there are is at least one major video hardware manufacturer in the Grass Valley area Grass Valley Group . I'm willing to bet that 169time is a part time gig for an employee or employees at this or another company in that area and that R&D is on an after hours basis. I'm also willing to bet that Andy is over his head and probably scared to admit he is in over his head.

I had an email exhange with Andy about 2 months ago where I offered my engineering skills to help do compatibility testing. We went back and forth and then I didn't hear from him. From the exchange I gathered that Andy is not the technical person behind this product. When I was discussing the possibilities of dumping the firmware on the tsops he said he hadn't done it but one of his techs could do it. This made me think it was an grass-roots-after-hours type of thing since there is no way that the market would be big enough for the development of this type of product on it's own.

Unfortunatly, if it's true that Andy is just in over his head and freaking out about it...he should have admitted it and took the heat... Even if he meant well he has crossed the line of good faith business practices.

I missed the discout by one day, otherwise I would be a moron too. I even considered taking them up on their offer to be "compensated" for loaning them a DV camcorder for compatability testing. That would have made me a complete moron!

the Superbowl is NOT going to be in HD this year? ARRRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!

OK, now I want to get law enforcement involved to arrest the sorry SOBs that aren't airing it in HD. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'll bet there are others too shy to tell what they paid. As Everett Dirkson once said "A billion here, a billion there ... pretty soon you're talking about real money."

Of the $6750 reported so far, if only 20% of the preorders are reporting, the $33,000 isn't enough to pay for development of this product. However, assuming it was a scam from the get-go, it reminds me of those Mastercard commercials:

Posting messages to generate a frenzy: $0
Making a poorly designed website: $0
Replying to some e-mail to maintain the illusion: $0
Refund check to Wirehead Rick: $600
Making $35K to $70K with virtually no investment at the expense of people with money to burn: Priceless.

When tallying this list of funds, keep in mind that "Andy" has posted in other areas and forums as well as the AVS forum. This is not his only marketing area. A quick search of Google Groups shows that he has posted on rec.video.marketplace. Others have posted links to the 169time products in various other newsgroups.
