I'm in the process of upgrading to HDTV (NBC and CBS are OTA in my area now), but I am spoiled with my TIVO. Is buying a PC with a big hard disk and a recording card the way to go now (9 gig per hour), or is recording to tape? Should I wait (is there something new, like a hi-def Tivo coming to market soon)? Any thoughts, since I'm starting from scratch, would help. Thanks

Steve

SDF,

The buzz is that there are some HD VCRs and TIVO type HD devices on the horizon. When is another issue.

Apparently Mitsubishi is unleashing an HD VCR this fall with a MSRP ~$1000, doesn't sound bad, but we'll see.

I've been asking this question for some time now. Let's see what everyone else thinks.

Troy

According to Charlie Ergen, the Dish Network has a HDTV TiVo like disk recorder in development. He stated they are evaluating the trade offs between recording time and disk size. The unit will directly record the HDTV bitstream so there will be no quality loss. He implied they hoped to have it out early next year. It would be good to ask for an update on the Dish Network July technical chat.

D-VHS works presently, though with some idiosyncrasies.

I have high hopes for the Dish HD product, but after reading the reviews of the PVR 501 I don't know. Only 14 events and 44 Hour guide. It's 4000 series hardware.
