Nobody has picked this up so I'll take a shot at it.
I took a look at the Skyworth site, but couldn't find a DVD with S-video inputs, so I'm not sure if I follow what you meant by hooking your DV cam to the DVD player. I'll assume you are simply comparing DV with SVHS and DVD and HD.
SVHS is very much low on the totum pole with a resolution of about 400 x 480i. DV is 500 x 480i, as is DVD. 16x9 versions of DV can have resolutions of 720 x 480p, but DVD gets no better than 720 x 480i. Some DVD players can scale up to 480p, but that doesn't increase the basic information. HD is in a world by itself, with resolutions as high as 1920 x 1080p. The PQ is equivalent to 35 mm film, which is why the MPPA is trying so hard to block home recording of HD.
Someone who _really_ knows what they're talking about might want to adjust some of my numbers, but I'm sure the basics are correct.
Analog -- Always out of adjustment.
Digital -- Always one more bug.
