As I have just acquired the fabled PV-HD1000 recorder I was wondering about its' history...why was this thing ever marketed in the first place? Surely Matsushita could have forseen Hollywoods' s**t fit about recording unencrypted digital bitstreams of their content! Also, what was DISH Network's role in all of this? Was their 5000 receiver and HD modulator specifically developed only for the Panny recording option or were there other reasons for bringing these products to market?

The 5000 w/HD Modulator was a last minute response by Dish to offer HDTV to their subscribers, as DirecTV had the RCA DTC-100 and they were a long way off from the 6000.

At the time, they didn't really think about someone having a DTV tuner with IEEE 1394 and compatible DVHS VCR.

As for Panasonic, who knows? It can be said they were way ahead of their time, much like their advertising claims.
