Well as I feared the November 1998 TU-DST50W I bought off eBay last week has the dreaded blue sparkly "feature" http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif
The Panny CSR today told me that they no longer exchange units for out of warranty items so it looks like I'll have to send it to their repair center in Elgin for a fix. Has anyone sent their DST50 there recently? Just wondering what the turnaround time for repairs is. I'm torn between getting it fixed (and perhaps getting it back with 5C copy protection added) versus just keeping it and putting up with the sparkles. Would adding an external fan help reduce the heat and prevent the sparkles from showing up?

I would try calling Panasonic again. I was told that at first and called back later (this time I talked to someone different) and they did the exchange no problemo. I think it may be the rep you got. Maybe he just didn't want to be bothered (it's possible).
Ofcourse, this was 2 months ago- maybe they did stop the exchanging since then.
It's worth a try...tell them you just bought it somewhere near you (not e-bay) if they ask.

Rick,
The first TU-DST50 that I owned I damaged by letting it overheat. I was not aware of the heating problem with these units. If run it as is, in about two minutes I get tiling and in 5 minutes the sound completely disappears. However, when I run this same unit with a 10" box fan, at lowest speed, placed on the right side of the unit, the DST50 works perfectly.
Try this first. If it doesn't work you have no choice. But the more difficult question is if this fix works, do you still want the unit repaired. My understanding is that they change/add a fan and do add 5C copy protection. Is this desireable? I don't know.
Good luck.
Chazz

Alright!! Good for you! I wonder how many sent their units in for repair because of a rep. not being helpful.

Advanced exchange. It takes three months! Talk to Steve Saluka at panasonic. It is a farce. Be very careful. DO NOT TRUST THEM!!

Got my replacement TU-DST50 in today...2 day turnaround from Panny!!! Everything works perfectly (including I'm sure the 5C firmware they slipped in there). I'll worry about 5C another day...when it came down to blue sparklies vs 5C there was really no choice in my mind.

I also got the remote for the DST50 this week that I ordered from Panny's Web site...nice remote, well worth the $57 they charged. I've seen some critical posts regarding Panny's customer support but you won't find any complaints from this corner. Panny has won themselves a customer for life this week! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

My "advanced exchange" came in 4 weeks late. Here are more low lights:

1) the unit will NOT communicate with my recorder!

2) They still have my other recorder up in IL!

I must have lucked out as I got my advanced replacement via overnight shipping. The CSR was very pleasant to deal with. Sorry to hear about those who had bad experiences.

As to the changes, they removed the secondary metal shielding on the inside and placed some foam weather stripping inside to guide the airflow. I assume they did the 5c thing as well as replace the appropriate transistors that were causing the heat problem. Works fine now.

Regards, Peter

I spoke too soon! My replacement DST-50 worked OK for a couple of hours, then I turned it off for an hour. When I turned it back on to watch the tape the audio output stopped. I'm getting no audio whatsoever now (I'm using it with a Yamaha receiver and Sony EP9ES AC-3 decoder).

Now I have 2 defective DST-50s! Why did I ever get involved in this hobby? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Hehe .Misery does luv company. Your situation is sad but mine is worse. Lets see 5 STBs and none pick up CBS. Wait there is more:

1) I WILL not return the defective STB to panasonic. I smell legal action very soon.

2) Out of three PANASONIC STBS only one will communicate with my recorder.

3) Hehe. My other recorder has been at factory service center for 2 months without an update!!

4) Do yourself a favor and stay FAR away from MR. Steve Saluka.

5) 4 weeks for advanced exchange. Ouch!

6) modifying my 50 STB but refusing to state what work was done.

7) Calling the factory in elgin. Someone picks up phone and hangs up! Redial and get answering machine.

8) several emails...no replies. WELL I WILL NOT RETURN ANYTHING TILL I GET ANSWERS!!

9) Oh yes...hours per day on phone waiting and waiting!!

I had a legal issue also with Panasonic and I won!
These people at Panasonic don't have a clue. Please file a complaint with the BBB. I did and they are still under investigation. The BBB office in IL are very good. You can go online and file their via email.
BTW:
MR. Steve Saluka is not honest and is very rude.
What ever you do only pay these guys with a CC so you can dispute it later. I guarantee you will be glad you did.

Thank you Roger for any help you can provide. I've got the weekend to fiddle with the replacement unit before I'll have to send it back to Elgin for another replacement!!! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/mad.gif

No problemo, we all appreciate your efforts very much.

Question: what precautions do you take (besides obviously unplugging the unit) to make sure you don't get socked with a stored voltage surge?

Rick,

The Panny is all low voltage stuff, just like any computer. You're thinking of computer monitors and TV's. That's where the high voltages are.

The concern with the DTS50, and any other low-voltage digital device, is just the opposite: you can sock it with your stored voltages! I'll explain how to deal with that when I get to the "pulling the chips" part.
