OK Guys,

I picked up two TU-DST50W's this weekend as follows:

Manufactured: January 1999
Serial Numbers: MR90130088, MR90130089
Software(/): 0.8
System Compatibility (?): QUAM

Both work, although nowhere near the tuner sensitivity of an accessDTV card which recieves everything in LA without antenna rotation.

Even with rotation the TU-DST50W's loose lock.

Were these poor OTA performers and would any type of amp help?

So, tell me what I've got and what I am in for.

Do these units need, or do I want, Panasonic service (copy guard updates?) ?

They both have full one year manufacturers warranty's as of today.

I do not yet see the "blue sparklies", but yes they run hot.

Will these control/record to and play back (out of component video outputs to a Toshiba HDTV) from the new Mits and JVC D-VHS Units later this year?

Thank you very much in advance.

Are you able to turn off the Channel Map in Setup? If you are, that might improve reception. Tom

Yes, I can turn off the channel map, and strangley it SEEMS to work slightly better WITH the mapping.

I am wondering if this is as good as it gets.

These were demos in retail stores and were supposedly Panansonic serviced, so maybe no "blue sparkles".

How long should I "burn-in" the units to reveal whether or not they have "blue sparkles"?

Hello Murray,

My first Pan STB had blue sparklies within 15 minutes of turning it on for the first time. My second STB was OK for a few months and then slowly degraded with excessive pixelation shortly after turn on.

I receive 31 sometimes, 36 sometimes, 42 sometimes, 43 never, 53 always, 59 always, 60 never, 65 always, and 66 always. The Pana STB's seem to have virtually identical performance to the RCA DTC100. I do use a low noise preamp.

BTW, thanks for your e-mail to me sharing your experiences with the Antennacraft antenna. I think it might be useful to everyone if you posted (on Glenn's Mt. Wilson thread) your experiences comparing the Antennacraft and the JBX21 antennas and the Pana STB's with the Access DTV tuner.

Good luck
