Would it be possible to create a recording device which would connect between the satellite dish and the receiver? It wouldn't need to decrypt the signal, just record it for later playback to the receiver.

The simple answer is no such device exists. D-VHS VCRs such as the Hughes HDR-205 record the digital bitstream when used with selected DirecTV receivers such as the Hughes HIRD-E45. These VCRs only record one channel at a time and require the DirecTV receiver to decode the data. Is it possible for a device to record the DirecTV stream including all data meaning all channels and information? I guess it is possible but the data storage requirements might be something like 100GB for a few minutes of programming.

It's a fun thought, but I believe recording even one transponder would require a recorder with a 25 mhz bandwidth that was phase accurate. Consumer machines are about 5 mhz and not very stable even for frequency, let alone phase.

Maybe next decade.

Analog -- Always out of adjustment.
Digital -- Always one more bug.
