How long have these units been available? I was surprised to see one on display. Nobody knew anything about it, but what else is new with HDTV? I hadn't thought much about HD recording until I saw the shiney piece of hardware sitting there waiting for a buyer. Now I gotta have it.

Search this forum for "HM-DH30000U" (sans the quotes, of course) or just "30000", for more details--we've been talking about it for the last two or three months since it was announced. There's been some dialog in these forums about the Japanese version since around February or March.

As for how long it's been out, it should have just shipped at the end of October.

Thanks Mike and Barry, I'd read the threads but missed the availability date. I was sure when I saw Ultimate's $1500 price that there were better prices on the net. Thanks guys.

I have followed the threads on the JVC deck for a while, but I'm still not clear on what this deck is supposed to be recording from. Obviously it's not our dst50's and 51's, what is the current firewire source of an HD signal?

And, did anyone ever get one of the JVCs to reliably record from a DST50 series decoder?

There was some hope that it could record from the ATSC tuner in Sony's new XBR2 sets--Gary Merson, who's been studying the sets for a print review, recently confirmed that they would not act as a video source, so they're out. I'm hoping that you can record from the tuner in Mitsubishi's new sets, since Mitsubishi is introducing a new, less expensive VCR with no HD I/O other than protected FireWire and has not announced any HD STB with FireWire. It should record the output of the few cable STBs equiped to do protected pass-thru of HD channels out of a Firewire port; Sony has a new one that's being deployed in the NYC area by Cablevision and Scientific Atlanta has three or four recent digital cable STBs with 1394 connections that can be so configured.

Update--Ken H., our moderator, just stated in one of the other threads here that a Mitsubishi rep told him that their new FireWire equiped sets are supposed to serve video from their tuners over the FireWire, for use with Mitsubishi's recorder, so they too can very probably be used with these JVC recorders.
