I'm thinking of investing in the HiPix, or similar card to use as a PVR. However, I would mostly play the material back on a different computer. I understand that accessDTV will not allow playback except through the card that recorded it.

My question, then, is what are the playback limitations of the HiPix system? For instance, could I record onto a portable USB drive, plug it into another computer and play back. Is it possible to playback an HDTV signal through software only? Or could I record in, say MPEG 2, and use a software DVD player? I don't mind sacrificing loss of quality, for playback portability.

If an external drive will work for this, what would be the minimum speed of drive needed, and will USB be fast enough?

Thanks,
John
