So who among us is going to rewrite the code to make this machine do what we want it to do? Like I said in my earlier post, it happens in all the time in the gaming world (Xbox, Wii, etc.)

For S&G I called to see if I could get a tracking number, the person was unwilling, did not know where it was, or whatever.

So I was unable to get one, just got the standard response. No big deal just thought I would give it shot.

Anybody know what the code is written in? I think some Sat Rcvr/DVRs use Linux and a lot of people have hacked that.

I'd like to look into this. I'm not an expert, by any stretch, but I know various types of programming and quite a bit of Linux system stuff. The first trick needed here is learning how to deliver an update to the box. In the cell phone world, the this is often done by analyzing the file that does an update to determine its structure and how to update checksums as changes are made. As such, it may not be possible to make progress on this subject until the first update is delivered.

To me, this is one of the key features of the DTVPal DVR: since it doesn't report in to a central facility, we should be able to modify it in any way we see fit and not have problems crop up in the future. (Except, of course, we may brick our box...)

I doubt I can pull too many mods off fully on my own, but perhaps we can start a thread on modding this where we can collaborate on HOWTOs and desired features...

Thoughts?

Reg

P.S. It would be nice if Dish would release the source code for this box. Several Linux-based products I own have released source code. I believe it may be a requirement of the GPL, but I am not sure on that point.

UPS just dropped off a box that says DTVPal DVR! Unfortunately, my wife took the box, put wrapping paper on it and it's already under the Christmas tree. At least I know what Santa is bringing.

Brutal! Good news is that other (less disciplined) chaps should be getting their hands on this dawg shortly.

According to the draft manual the GNU Public License applies. I forget whether that means Linux or FreeBSD. It says the open source portion is available at www.dishnetwork.com

Good catch! I'm willing to bet it's Linux. I find no "Downloads" section on the regular www.dishnetwork.com site, but if you go to www.dtvpal.com and click the "Support" button, then you can now see a section entitled "DTVPal DVR Software Downloads" with an entry that says "Coming Soon..." I guess this is where we should look for firmware updates and source code.

Thanks!

Suggestions for the LB's who have units now, please list your individual connectivity/setups (HDMI, Ethernet, TOS, etc)

I called and they couldn't give me a tracking number. Ordered on the 19th. Said something about a delay and that it might be going out today but couldn't confirm. I guess I'll get it when i get it.

For everybody trying to figure out a time frame. I ordered 2 one week apart the first was a straight order online without Dish account info. The second time I ordered it was about 3 days later, on my dish account, on the phone with a rep. The second order came first, probably because I am a (loyal) dish customer. The second order was placed about 12/4

Thanks! That's exactly what I'm looking for. I ordered on December 2 (I think), but I've never been loyal, so we'll see...

I ordered my unit on 11/19 and Dish Network still doesn't have a tracking number. I even talked to an executive office person and they have sent an email internally. I have a couple of questions for those that have received them.

1. Did anyone receive a unit after Dish Network told them they didn't have a tracking number?

2. Did anyone receive a unit that they ordered online?

Please take all discussion of the actual Dish DTVPal units, which have just today (12/22/28) started to arrive at end users residences, to this new topic: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1099071

Please continue to use this topic for discussion of the previous issues, like orders and shipping info.

DO NOT call the number indicated on your order page 1-888-638-9912 unless you want to talk to a high pressure salesperson about buying Dish Service. BTW Dish is still showing a ship date of 1/12/2009 for those who didn't order by 12/10/2008.
