I noticed the same while browsing yesterday.

I really enjoy the R500s I picked up, so I'm beginning the search for a deal on a R200C.

The R500 really seems to be an "unsung hero" for home theater and music listening when combined with a good sub. Where you have those rare mid-bass module units I'm guessing the sound is even better as the smaller 5-1/4" woofers on the R500 start to really shine above 80-100Hz.

As to the KEF Direct website, it's been a couple days now and it's costing them sales. I hope for their sake someone is aware of the issue and working on it.

You should be able to find a bargain, but how much do you really expect? Mine is new from a dealer who because of my total business with them (R500 & R100 pairs, SVS SB1000 & SB2000, and Bluesound Vault) gave me 15% off for a new one that had to be ordered in walnut. Where do you normally buy?

KEF R500, R200C, R100, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758 receiver, Pro-Ject RPM1 TT w/ Ortofon 2M Red, Bluesound Vault2, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer.

To be honest since I received the R500s I haven't found need for the MBMs. I used those with my previous Def Tech bookshelf speakers (I suppose I should update my sig again).

The R500s were purchased from another forum member, but in the past I usually dealt direct with manufacturers (SVS and HSU) or Magnolia (Def Tech). KEF dealers are nonexistent in the Houston area, I did visit a dealer just north of Houston in Conroe TX, but the product line on display is limited to a pair of LS50s. They stated they can order anything I need, but it seems silly to order from them when I can order direct.

As for my "bargain" price, it's hard to judge the used market because there are so few R200C available. I suspect once obtained the owners must be happy enough to stay with them. Every other price I see is MSRP, which I may end up paying if my patience runs out.

I'll then need to find a rear speaker solution. I'd like to use the R100s, but with the rear firing port it would make them impossible to place since they would need to be wall or shelf mounted, would the Q100s be a better option since they have forward firing ports? I know the LCR speakers should be matched, do you think I would regret using the Qs in the rear?

Main: Marantz SR7010 | Oppo UDP-203 | KEF R500 | KEF R200C | SpeakerCraft AIM5 Series 2 | SVS PB12-NSD | Panamax 7500-PRO | Vizio M60-D1
Office: Emotiva MC-700 | Emotiva A-700 | Oppo BDP-103 | KEF R100 | KEF R200C | SVS PB12-NSD | SpeakerCraft AIM5 Series 2 | HSU MBM-12 | Panamax M4300-PM | Visio E50-C1
Work Shop: Speakercraft Vital 910 | Oppo BDP-93 | KEF Q300 | KEF Q200C | Def Tech SM 450 | HSU MBM-12 | Polk PSW 505

What color would you be looking for in an R200c center speaker? There's an eBay seller "HumanAudio" who lists a number of them for $799.00 (20% off list) and they have a high rating. You're right about not many being available used, it'll be a lottery winnings upgrade before I give up mine and that's not likely to happen.

As for rear speakers I went with R100 because I have the walnut finish on my front three and wanted "uniform look and sound." In my installation they are on shelves with perhaps 3 or 4 inches to the wall. I actually like the slightly more voluminous bass out of them as it's still good and not boomy. The sound is just incredible and really so good I could probably kill the R500's and not know much difference. If looks aren't your concern and wall proximity is, then perhaps go with the Q100 for its front port. Just be aware that (probably on purpose for the reason you as an R series owner is considering them) none of the finishes between Q and R actually match. The black and white are high gloss on the R and not on the Q, the walnut are different (European on Q, American on R) while the rosewood may be the closest.

Best of luck!

KEF R500, R200C, R100, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758 receiver, Pro-Ject RPM1 TT w/ Ortofon 2M Red, Bluesound Vault2, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer.

My R500s are "piano black". I did see the offer on eBay from the seller you mentioned. I've always been a little wary of eBay purchases, not sure why since everything I ever purchased there went perfectly well.

I'm in no great hurry, I'm still in awe of just the R500s in a 2.1 setup with a single PB12-NSD. I can only imagine what your setup must sound like!

My system sounds really good in all modes and it's only flaws are the rear speakers need to be lowered from up high and there's one null spot with the sub because of the room shape and sub placement issues. If you're anywhere near me or ever in the 'hood, come and listen.

I am upgrading the sub to the SB2000 next weekend. After hearing the difference between my current one and the SB2000 that my son & I went in on for him, I just have to get one!

I wouldn't fear buying from that eBay dealer, their reputation is solid. I might have but I get the same kind of discounts off list from a dealer an hour from me and don't mind the drive one bit. I'll always prefer supporting the local dealer so their store is there the next time I want to audition a speaker, receiver, amp, sub or other product. I'm on such good terms now I can literally pick something off the floor and walk out to try it for a few days to a couple weeks with nothing more than a handshake.

I like them so much that I approached them with the "12 Days Of Christmas" sale KEF Direct had on the R100 pair for $799.99 and got the same price, they got the credit for the deal.

KEF R500, R200C, R100, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758 receiver, Pro-Ject RPM1 TT w/ Ortofon 2M Red, Bluesound Vault2, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer.

Good thing it's fixed. And a good thing it's the Q500 you have on the special pricing. If it were the Q700 I'd be a bit poorer by now and my son would have the most complete Q series 7.1.4 system known (other than the ".1" sub.)

I do wish KEF would offer a competitive sub. All they have are smaller, less powerful subs for far too much money, though they sure look good!

Will the Q100s play my rock music loud? I have a 120/channel Yamaha receiver. We like to turn it up sometimes, after the party gets rolling. I have a inexpensive Polk subwoofer to round out the bar system.

They're rated for up to 107dB, which is pretty loud. How loud depends upon how far from the speakers is the listening position and whether or not sitting "on axis" (in front of them.) I assume that's what it can deliver at it's maximum rating of 100 watts (continuous) and transient peaks from a 120w/ch receiver being in no danger of blowing them up.

Being on sale at KEF Direct for $299.99 a pair, that's quite a bargain for a speaker that far outclasses an "inexpensive Polk subwoofer." I have a pair of similar (but much more expensive) R100 bookshelf speakers that I can't turn up all the way to their limit of the same rating without getting konked on the head by my wife.

I bought those during KEF Direct's "12 Days Of Christmas" sale for 1/3rd off. The current deal on Q100 is closer half price, so jump on it!

KEF R500, R200C, R100, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758 receiver, Pro-Ject RPM1 TT w/ Ortofon 2M Red, Bluesound Vault2, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer.

I did pull the trigger, Ken. They'll be here tomorrow and my weekend guests and I will give them a good tryout. My bar area is kind of tight, so I suspect we'll have all the volume we'll need. Thanks!

Cool. Welcome to the KEF owner family!

You'll be pleasantly surprised at how good they are for the money.

And any feedback on the Q100? Do they meet or exceed your expectations?

Curious minds want to know.

We had a big event in our town this weekend so I never got around to hooking them up yet. They're still in the box. I need to help a friend tonight so Tuesday night will likely be the demo session. I'll be sure to provide feedback as a music lover with little technical background in audio.

Hey Ken,

You guilted me into opening them and hooking them up the other day. Thank you! Here's my amateur review after only 3 or 4 songs. I should have more time this weekend with some buds coming over for college basketball and fun.

Small - I was surprised how small and light they are, but very deep. If they weren't mounted over my back bar, they would probably stick out too much, but they are perfect where I have them. This isn't a bad thing, and something I should have anticipated via the specs.

Cabinets - Sharp corners, black wood grain, basic, simple grills. They look European to me, whatever the heck that means.

Driver - The driver looks smaller than I expected, and look smaller than what the specs say, but I'm sure if I measured it, it is exactly on.

Hookups - I've never owned a pair of speakers with this type of quality hookups. Very nice.

Initial impression of the sound - I'll throw out some coined terms, but this is really what I thought of: full, neutral, powerful (I can't wait to turn them up). I would say less bright and crisp than my Klipsch bookshelves, but I think I'm going to really like them. They just seem well rounded. I expected to be impressed as I've never had anything at this price point. I'll plan for another update after they get a good workout.

Yes, the KEF Uni-Q driver/tweeter is known for being more controlled, less piercing than the lower level Klipsch speakers. For a few people with damaged hearing in the upper levels (the first thing to go), the Klipsch may be more tolerable.

Thanks for the feedback. Great "bang for the buck" at that sale price.

These Q100s got a good workout on Friday night. At moderately high volumes, the little drivers made a thumping sound as if they couldn't handle the bass I was sending them. I think the crossover is set at 60 or 80Hz. Should I go up 20 at a time and play bass heavy music to see if it disappears? This is a show stopper if I can't eliminate this. I wonder if I should have picked out a larger bookshelf with better bass, like JBLs or Polks. And I wonder what Amazon and/or KEFs return policy is?

Do you have a subwoofer in play here? Have you tried a test of the same music with and without the foam plug in the port?

It seems you have an AV receiver with Audyssey if you are mentioning the crossover point. If that's the case, you could do exactly what you suggested and try setting to 80, 100, and 120 as most subwoofers (other than the huge 18" and up) would handle over 140hz with no problem.

As for returns, where did you buy them? Was it KEF Direct or Amazon? I thought you chose those speakers because they just barely fit, now considering larger ones confuses me.

Yes, I have a couple budget level subs, but each can probably fill in the lows good enough for my needs. I'll try various crossovers and see what happens. I have beefy wall mounts that can handle pretty much any size bookshelf speakers. I had Boston CR-8 and the mounts are beefy enough to handle even slightly larger speakers than those. The Bostons had many years of use and both are non-operational, and I'm in no way qualified to fix them. I got the Q100s at Amazon when they went on sale for $299. Thanks.

FWIW, my son has the next size up Q300 as his L-R mains and uses my old Denon AVR1912 to power them, his Q200c center, iQ10 rears and Q800ds surrounds. In 2.1 stereo mode those speakers sound remarkably good. They did cost him around $560 a pair though.

When you try different things, also remember to try at the various crossover setting with and without the port plug in it. With it in I think you'll get smoother response and your subs will take over from there.

Will do, thanks. I'm going to give these a nice tryout again today. In the meantime, I'm starting to think about powered bookshelf speakers. I never really gave them much thought, but starting to wonder if this is something that would fit my needs as I like to fill my basement with pretty good volumes, and have high demands for bass. I was reading reviews on the Yamaha and Klipsch powered speaks.

Just an update on the KEF Q100s I purchased. After Amazon inaccurately charged me $50 for return shipping, I was able to return the Q100s with almost a full refund. I did a chat with their support group and they figured out why the ship charge was wrong. Just to be clear, I had absolutely no problem with those, they simply weren't what I was looking for, which was a "rock n roll" type speaker. They are probably a better choice for many or most people, but not me, and not in my bar room. I hooked up my old Klipsch KSB 3.1 speakers that I use in my camp and remembered why Klipsch are my style of speaker...bright and powerful. So that convinced me to order a pair of Klipsch RP-160M's with the money I got credited. They were also on sale for around $380. I believe the MSRP is $600 but they originally sold for over $500 I'm guessing. My original Klipsch choice was the RB-61 but the shop I bought them from talked me into the newer RP line. We'll see how it goes, but I'm pretty sure I'm done buying and returning speakers for a while, and it's time to sell some of my older stuff. Thanks!

If you had said you prefer bright speakers before you bought the Q100 I would have suggested the Klipsch products and saved you trouble. The newer Reference Premier line is more refined, not as "overly" bright as the previous Reference series so I'm pretty sure you'll be happy.

Thanks for playing along.

BTW, I don't know offhand how big the RP-160M is or how much you'd be paying, but this deal is for the previous generation of the Q series and the tweeter isn't as "tamed" as it is on the current series.

Cheap enough, given the original price.
