As AVSFORUM members we are either music fans, movie fans or both. As a result, between us all we must have listened to thousands of hours of art.

In this thread, I'm keen to know what some your favourite song lyrics are.

I have started another thread for movie dialogue.

Republicans is fine,
If you're a multi-millionaire
Democrats is fair,
If all you own is what you wear
Neither of 'em's REALLY right,
'Cause neither of 'em CARE
'Bout that Hot-Plate Heaven,
'Cause they ain't been there

LOL...Zappa was a great wordsmith...the Muffin Man, Dinah Moe Humm, Montana, and Wind up working in a gas station, are good fun, but I always liked:

"I'm gross and prevented, I'm obsessed and deranged, I've existed for years, but very little has changed.
I'm a tool of the government, and industry too. For I'm destine to rule, and regulate you.
I may be vile and pernicious, but you can't look away, I make you think I'm delicious with the things that I say,
I'm the best you can get, have you guessed me yet?...I'm the slime oozing out of your tv set.

Zappa's "The Slime", from "Over-night Sensation".

Also I'd add the complete lyrics to John Lennon's "Imagine".

Then there's this soft little ditty:
Blackened in the end, winter it will send, throwing all you see, into obscurity...death of mother earth, never a rebirth, evolution's end, never will it mend.
Blistering of Earth, terminate it's worth, deadly nicotine, kills what might have been.
Callous frigid chill, nothing left to kill, never seen before, breathing nevermore.
Smouldering decay, take her breath away, millions of our years, in minutes disappear.

Metallica, "Blackened" from "and Justice for all"

Anything from Roger Waters, or this song credited to all of Pink Floyd:

ECHOES

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and
Something tries
And starts to climb towards the light!

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun
And now this is the day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streamin in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky!

Almost all Roger Waters; much of Don Henley's writing; much of Sting's.

This from Toy Matinee's "Queen of Misery" --
Insane domain...
Checks her make-up, bites her nails,
One more tab--a dreamer's veil--
Such a shallow scene.
She asks for God to save the queen.

Bleak Opeth:

Beating
Heart still beating for the cause
Feeding
Soul still feeding from the loss
Aching
Limbs are aching from the rush
Fading
You are fading from my sight

Break of morning, coldness lingers on
Shroud me into nightmares of the sun

Moving
I am moving closer to your side
Luring
You are luring me into the night
Crying
Who is crying for you here
Dying
I am dying fast inside your tears

Plunging towards bereavement faster yet
Clearing thoughts, my mind is set

Devious movements in your eyes
Moved me from relief
Breath comes out white clouds with your lies
And filters through me
You're close to the final word
You're staring right past me in dismay
A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away
Mist ripples round your thin white neck
And draws me a line
Cold fingers mark this dying wreck
This moment is mine

Help me cure you
Atone for all you've done
Help me leave you
As all the days are gone

Devious movements in your eyes
Moved me from relief
Breath comes out white clouds with your lies
And filters through me
You're close to the final word
You're staring right past me in dismay
A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away
Mist ripples round your thin white neck
And draws me a line
Cold fingers mark this dying wreck
This moment is mine
Night falls again
Taking what's left of me

Slight twist, shivering corpse
Ornated with water, fills the cracks
Clasped in my limbs by tradition
This is all you need

And open wide the hymns you hide
You find renown while people frown
At things that you say

-- Nick Drake, Things Behind the Sun

I'm lying down, blowing smoke from my cigarette
Little wispy smoke signs that you'll never get

-- Elliott Smith, Condor Ave

When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person that you really are now

-- Sly and the Family Stone, If You Want Me to Stay

Well, I've been living on a chemical track
I've walked a million miles, there's no going back
I've smelled it, smoked it, tasted it all
I've been 2 feet high, I've been 10 feet tall

-- Uncle Green, Chemical Way

Drink up baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do
You won't, but you might
The potential you'll be, that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make

-- Elliott Smith, Between the Bars

You belong to a simpler time
I'm a victim to the impact of these words,
And this rhyme

-- The Shins, Sea Legs

Remember your dreams
are your only schemes
So keep on pushing

-- Curtis Mayfield, Move On Up

Remember the weight of the world
It's a sound that we used to buy
On cassette and 45

-- Spoon, I Summon You

Alex doesn't live here anymore

Hate Me Today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOziJi-1hHE

I'm sober now for 3 whole months, it's one accomplishment that you helped me with
The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won't touch again
In a sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night
While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight
You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate
You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take
So I'll drive so f**king far away that I'll never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind

I want to die in my sleep like grandpa... not kicking and screaming like the people in his car.

I'd like to see.

Theme song from Billy Jack covered by Coven. It was originally sang by a Canadian band called The Original Caste.

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley folk below
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore
They'd have it for their very own

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after who...
One tin soldier rides away

So, the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill
Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers, we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there"

Now, the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses, draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain people
So, they won their just reward
Now, they stood beside the treasure
On the mountain dark and red
Turn the stone and looks beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after who...
One tin soldier rides away

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after who...
One tin soldier rides away

Since it is that time of year (clean version of the lyrics):

"And if I am elected
I promise the formation of a new party
A third party, a World Party!
I know we have problems,
We got problems right here in Central City,
We have problems on the North, South, East and West,
New York City, Saint Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles,
Detroit, Chicago,
Everybody has problems,
And personally, I don't care."

Anything by Roger Waters or MJK.

Quote:

I find that I can see a light at the end down
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole.
Defeated I Concede and move closer. I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness. How pitiful.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.
It's calling me.

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping.
The moon tells me a secret. My confidant.
As full and bright as I am, this light is not my own
A million light reflections pass over me
It's source is bright and endless.
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her we are lifeless satellites dreaming dreams.
And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt
Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.

So crucify the ego before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical
And you will come to find that we are all one mind

Just let the light touch you and let the words spill thorough
Just let them pass right through, bringing out our hope and reason.

before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.
before I pine away.

Reflection by Reverend Maynard "The Slayer of Evil" Keenan

"Your denial is beneath you, and thanks to the use of hallucinogenic drugs, I see through you..."

Blinded by the Light, Springsteen.

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground
Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his hands,
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band

And she was blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright

...

Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun
Oh but mama that's where the fun is

If stupidity got us into this mess,
then why can't it get us out?

^^^ Well, if you're going to post Springteen songs that were performed by another artist, then I've gotta post Because The Night

Take me now baby here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed

Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when Im in your hands
Take my hand come undercover
They cant hurt you now,
Cant hurt you now, cant hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us

Have I doubt when Im alone
Love is a ring, the telephone
Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun descends
They cant touch you now,
Cant touch you now, cant touch you now
Because the night belongs to lovers ...

With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you I cannot live
Forgive, the yearning burning
I believe its time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now
Because the night belongs to lovers ...

Because tonight there are two lovers
If we believe in the night we trust
Because tonight there are two lovers ...

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.

Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.

They say there are strangers who threaten us,
In our immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness, too dangerous
In our theatres and bookstore shelves,
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice
And fear
Walk hand in hand.

How about "Pi," in which Kate Bush recites the numerical value of the ratio of circular circumference-to-diameter to over 100 digits? The fact that it sounds beautiful says so much about her voice.

Absence make her heart grow fonder
While I’m conquering the last frontier
Lately I’ve found myself wonderin’ out loud
Wonderin’ what I was doin’ here

One day you’ll understand how much you have me
One day you’ll realise we have it easy
I can’t offer you the future - I don’t know it myself
All I can offer you is me

I'm with everybody who said PF and Roger Waters.

How about an oldie? Shades Of Gray by the Monkees.

When the world and I were young, just yesterday
Life was such a simple game a child could play
It was easy then to tell right from wrong
Easy then to tell weak from strong
When a man should stand and fight
Or just go along
But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray
I remember when the answer seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt, or tasted fear
It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate
The foolish from the wise
But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray
It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care
But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray
