11. The Stuff (NF Instant)
Probably haven't seen this since 86 or 87. So it is pretty fun to revisit, especially with pre L&O Moriarty and Sorvino, Garret Morris and a ton of other familiar faces that pop up. I don't think I fully understood the nature of Sorvino's character at 11 or 12. At 40 I was loving it. In a They Live kind of way this movie was ahead of its time. Still relevant if not moreso today.

For the SAW fans out there, Best Buy has SAW: The Complete Movie Collection on Blu-ray + Ultraviolet for $20. All 7 unrated films are on 3 discs, packaged in a standard single size case. I almost passed it up thinking it was only the first movie.

This is a really good movie, shot in first-person shaky-cam style done really well, you really feel part of the movie. Great attack on New York City, with superb city special effects, good pacing, keeps you in suspense, this is one very enjoyable movie.

Plus i like that fact that they rode the Wonder Wheel (a big ferris wheel for those of you un-familiar with Coney Island). I rode it as a little kid, and just about 2 months ago i went up to New York on a vacation and rode it again, approx 60 years from when i rode it as a 6 yr old kid (I am now 66) - how many times do you get a chance to do a ride 60 years apart in your life? The same ride, not something similar. That was great, and so is this movie. I will give it a 4.25 rating, might deserve higher really as i love how NYC is used.

35. Wolfcop. FTV. I've been excited for this one and it delivers. It's a horror comedy and the title sums it up. A drunken deputy gets entangled in an ancient evil and becomes a supernatural beast that cleans up a shady little town. Full of charm and some hilarious writing it tells a great little story. Pretty good effects and appropriate gore sequences which include but are not limited to exploding penises and wolf sex. The transformation scenes are really good and nasty but they don't spend enough time on them. At the end of the day I wanted more but enjoyed what I got. Can't wait for part 2.

36. The Visitor. FTV. Not sure what to make of this of this 1979 flick about supernatural wombs, psychic kids, interdimensional weirdos, killer birds, and a basketball team owner.

16- COLD PREY 2 or FRITT VILT II 2008 (FTV) This is basically the Norwegian version of Michael Meyers or Jason. Nothing new here, but is really well done. Filmed in Norway, so great scenery. Very good heroines with good action and the usual blunders by characters along the way. Pretty fun movie! Also, funny to me they had a shower scene that was completely unnecessary but then there is no nudity? Wha? Gratuitous shower scene, in a horror movie, and nothing? LOL, crazy!

12. Cabin in the Woods (BD)
Had a few friends over to watch this. We'd all seen before. Better on repeat viewing. Noticed a few things I hadn't really caught before.

13. Maniac (2012, NF Streaming, FTV)
I remember as a 10ish year old asking a movie critic about horror movies and he mentioned that he absolutely hated the movies that gave killer-vision type sequences and how sadistic anyone must be who enjoyed those shots was. Well here was a movie largely shot in first degree perspective from the killer. It certainly didn't make it easy to watch, but it was a pretty nifty way to shoot the movie and I think it was a lot more than a gimmick. Haven't seen the original but would like to hunt it down just to see what it was all about.

"Witching & Bitching" is a fun horror dark comedy about a heist crew on the run that wind up in a town where witches rule. In Spanish with subtitles and added yesterday on Netflix. Four milking toads.

Finally got around to watching Phantasm last night, and for me, it was a first time viewing! I wasn't too sure what to make of it at first but it got interesting and came together nicely in the end. This movie may not have totally been my thing, but it was fun and unusual. The Tall Man is a welcome change from the "normal" horror movie villain. For sure a good pick to watch at or near Halloween!

18. Friday the 13th Part V (1985) - 3.0

I was pretty tired the other night, and got a late start, so we ended up putting on another Friday the 13th just to keep things moving. We watched Part V, which is the odd one of the bunch. It was fine, but I think being sandwiched between IV and VI accentuates some of its weaknesses. I always feel like something is off with this one (other than the twist ending), and I think I realize about 3-4 kills in each time that it’s because the deaths are much more straightforward, and most of them are committed by a disembodied hand. The sudden appearance of a hand with a knife making a slashing movement at the camera doesn’t do enough to build tension for me.

19. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)(FTV) - 3.0

The wife suggested this one, after enjoying the first two so much. She did not like this one nearly as much. It was a lot more torture-y than the others, and she does not have a stomach for that at all. I thought this was a good remake, but it certainly was missing some of the charm of the original.

15. Jug Face (FTV)
Backwoods folk in the moonshine belt worship a presence called The Pit which demands regular blood sacrifice to protect them from bad fortune. The Pit's will is made known through the jug-face art of a feebleminded potter, so when an unwed pregnant girl realizes her number is up, she tries to change her fate. I'll give Jug Face some points for originality, although it contains echoes of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", and the strange culture of this Appalachian community is the perfect setting for a horror film. Unfortunately there really isn't much else to recommend in Jug Face--there are no characters to root for or empathize with, no real scares to be had, and nothing very interesting happens. We're left sitting to watch the inevitable play out and there's no pleasure in it. This film was more popular among film critics than it was the general audience (78% vs 34% on Rotten Tomatoes) and I can't say I'm surprised--it feels like it was made by outsiders who know what a good film looks like, but not how to actually make one.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

Bob's October 2014 Horror Movie List
FTV denotes first time viewing
1. From Beyond The Grave (FTV) 3/5
2. Bad Dreams (FTV) 3.5/5
3. Bug (1975) (FTV) 2/5
4. The Sacrament (FTV) 3.5/5
5. The Funhouse (FTV) 4/5
6. The Atomic Submarine (FTV) 4/5
7. 13 Sins (FTV) 4/5
8. Tales from the Darkside: The Movie 3.5/5
9. Stir of Echoes 4.5/5

11. The Hole (FTV) 4/5
12. Shivers (FTV) 3.5/5

14. Frozen (2010) {4.25/5} Blu-ray This is a repeat from my 2010 marathon and it was equally as effective this time around. I don't think I've heard much talk about this one on the forum for awhile, so if there are any folks out there that haven't seen it, I would suggest doing so. In this movie, there is no "killer" or supernatural force that haunts the characters, it is simply about a group of 3 friends who get stuck on a chairlift at a ski resort. The acting is kind of hit and miss when the movie begins, but when they are on the lift and despair slowly begins setting in, the actors give believable and heart-wrenching performances. This movie is hard to watch because of the hopelessness of the situation and the drastic choices they have to make to survive. All in all, a very well done movie written and directed by Adam Green (who also did the Hatchet movies for those familiar with them). Rating stands from 4 years ago and it is highly recommended for at least a one time watch.

Is this the Jessica Biel movie? I couldn't stop thinking about that one for days after watching it.

As much as I like Jessica Biel, I have purposely avoided that movie since it came out. Not really sure why. Is it worth a watch??

It was OK. Nothing groundbreaking but it does make you think. If Jessica Biel wasn't in it I probably wouldn't have watched it. If you're expecting a horror movie you will be disappointed.

Nope. The Tall Man he speaks of is way scarier.
