27. Grave Encounters (2011)- {3.5/5} Netflix Streaming (FTV) In yet another found footage offering, this time we have a reality show called Grave Encounters where a team of paranormal investigators go to various locations to film the unexplained activities that have been reported. This brings them to an abandoned psychiatric hospital to film the shows next (and final) episode. When it starts, I had a tough time getting over the show's host (Seth Rogerson) with his cheesy and annoying on-camera dialog. Of course, I had an idea of what was to come, so I hung with it and it turned out to be a good decision. I liked the abstract story and the sporadic placements of the scares. The acting was adequate enough to pull things together and even though there could have been a little more at the end to wrap things up, it was just fine to leave things to interpretation. Good movie.

28. Argento's Dracula (2012)- {1.75/5} Blu-ray (FTV) So here we have Dario Argento's take on the classic Bram Stoker novel and to be honest, I was considering the oink treatment after the first 10 minutes. Really bad acting and poor execution were the primary issues. I continued to trudge my way through though, and as the story gets rolling; things began to get better. In the end, the movie was still pretty bad but not a complete flop as I initially expected. We get some great set pieces and a solid score that one should come to expect with Argento. We also get some good eye candy and the requisite nakedness of his daughter Asia. Its so friggin strange that he continues to film his daughter naked. Anyway, there were a few entertaining scenes complete with good kills along with a particular scene that was so out of place that one has to wonder if it was added in as some sort of stupid joke (praying mantis scene). I didn't watch this in 3D as I have no interest in that technology so I'm not sure if it would have made this a more enjoyable watch. My guess....highly doubtful...as I suspect that it would take a helluva lot more than that to turn this thing around.

Spoiler alert! LOL. No but seriously, I honestly found that one of the best parts when I saw it in the theater.

30. Maniac (1980) (Youtube, FTV)
I watched the Elijah Wood remake earlier this month so figured I'd give the original a shot. Tough to judge this movie on its own, but its quite unsettling to watch in its own right. The killer is like an uglier Ron Jeremy, if that's possible, and is definitely creepy to the nth degree. Some great Savini work here, including him blowing up his own head with a shotgun, that I think may be the shot that put the movie on the map. Definitely worth a watch especially if you've seen/liked the remake already. Not a movie I think I'd watch over and over or bring friends to see though.

I tossed away 99 cents on "Wonderland" via VUDU. Not worth wasting any time on. Nice idea, poor execution. Proves that even folks with no talent can make a movie. I did finish up a rewatch of "They Live" though.

You might like Afflicted and the Posession of Michael King they at least portray things as a self documentary/youtuber so the go pro cam on everything can be forgiven. Deborah Logan was strong in that regard also.

32. Event Horizon (1997)(FTV) - 4.5

Whoa!!(<-Think Joey Lawrence-style). I wanted to stick with the general tone of Hellraiser, and this movie definitely hits it. I know it is highly regarded around here, so I don’t think I have much to add, or need to convince anyone this is an excellent movie. Aside from just being put together well, the atmosphere had me tense the whole time. Something about possibly seeing the worst thing each of the crew members could think of really opens up a diverse range of possible horrors. The only thing that kept it from being a full 5.0 for me was that it didn’t string me along all the way through the ending.
Spoiler!

I love this movie and I play it a few times a year! There is a good chuck of footage missing from the theatrical cut and I hope it re-releases one day complete!

28. From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (FTV)
Bank robbers run into vampires. I enjoyed this way more than I probably should have. It has a lower budget than its predecessor but it makes up for it with a lot of style (sometimes a bit too much style) and a great sense of humor. Great to see Bruce Campbell in the opening cameo scene, Danny Trejo returning as the bartender, and T2's Robert Patrick is excellent as usual. A really good time and loads of fun.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Too many non talented and un-gifted folks making horror movies.

The teet is fine. It's all the bad zombie movies coming from the other orifices that suck.

This.

There are WAY too many bad ones coming and going and some that just won't go away.

Walking Dead? Go away, please. "You have overstayed your welcome" = every television series that last longer than two or three seasons, including this one. Soap opera with headshots. Not impressed.

Zombies caused by a 'virus'. Please stop.

Zombie movies where people are not self-aware of zombies. "What are those ... things?!?!" A zombie, m-f'er. Do those movies not exist in your universe?

Themed zombie type movies. IE: zombie strippers, zombie rednecks, etc.

Blacula (1972) - "An ancient African prince, turned into a vampire by Dracula himself, finds himself in modern Los Angeles."

IMDB needs to revise that synopsis. The 1972 version of Los Angeles didn't look very modern to me. Still, it was a fun movie.

Besides the BD version of Event Horizon, HDNet did a great job at broadcasting that version as well! I think you will enjoy the movie as it is a perfect mashup of SciFi and Horror!

Yea, I saw the photos posted here before, and I think they show flashes of most of it during the movie, but don't ever give you the full-on blast. I was reading the trivia on it, and it seems like they relied too heavily on test audiences to make changes, including the ending.

It's worth making it one of your final views before the end of the month. I found myself flipping through my collection for a while tonight, trying to pick something that would maintain the rush I got watching it, and it was hard (I failed).

33. Rawhead Rex (1986)(FTV) - 3.5

Welp, I was having a hard time picking tonight. As I've said before, I have way too many unwatched movies left to choose from, and I'm chasing the high I got from Event Horizon. I was hoping I could go 3 for 3 with Clive (he was a consultant during pre-production on EH), but I was wrong. However, I'm trying not to take my disappointment out on the movie. It was an excellent B-movie, I was just looking for something that would blow me away. The premise is a demon is brought back to life in Ireland and terrorizes the countryside. It was competently put together, and the actors clearly put in a huge effort. The result is you get some pretty good performances balanced out with some laughably crazy performances (like the pregnant lady in the beginning - the actress tried so hard, but just made me chuckle). It also had a bunch of great (unintentionally?) hilarious dialogue. "Get upstairs, f***face!" or "Would you care for a cup of tea?", "Why don't you go f*** yourself!" The 2nd half of the movie was stacked with crazy lines that came out of nowhere with great delivery. Also, I think someone got peed on. It was hard to tell, because the monster tended to stand around a lot anyway. I'm sure it was intended to come across as a grand statement about religion and humanity, but it didn't work out that way at all. Worth a watch if you can, certainly not worth the $100+ it's going for on some sites.

I watched Event Horizon last night and followed it up with Apollo 18. It was a very good pairing. Both are excellent in their own way and have a completely different look and feel. Event Horizon has more of a futuristic fantasy action feel while Apollo 18 makes it very easy to believe you are watching real footage from a '70s NASA mission.

The bad side of test screening.
