18. Nosferatu: the Vampyre (1979) FTV

Ehhhhh, I wanted more out of this. It was shot beautifully and incredibly atmospheric, and they did a phenomenal job capturing abject terror. The silence of the most intense scenes made them that much more terrifying. There just wasn't enough of it. I know sometimes it's more horrifying when you don't see the monster (a la Jaws), but I thought Count Dracula was the most interesting and engaging character in the movie. For me, the "not showing the monster" part was having him on screen being creepy with no idea what he was going to do.

19. Zombeavers (2015) FTV

I got this one in as well. I had been waiting for it for a while after someone posted the trailer here a while back, and there was too much talk to pass it up. I agree w/ most positive comments here. It was well done, not real scary, but excelled at the humor.

15. Crimson Peak (FTV)
Guillermo del Toro makes the best-looking haunted house movie ever. Since this is such a new movie I'm not going to spoil many plot details, but if you've seen the previews you get the idea. Much will be made of del Toro's incredible visuals, justifiably so, but what also works well in this film is the murky, dark repressed atmosphere of the era. The acting performances are excellent and the ghosts are creepy and threatening. The only area it disappoints is that the human motivations and rationale are a bit too simplistic and generic--I was hoping for a little more originality and complexity there. Cinematically this is a 5 out of 5 star movie, but story-wise they played it too straight and safe. Still, this is del Toro at his best: lush, visual, atmospheric, and creepy.

4 out of 5 stars.

13. I Spit on Your Grave (2010) FTV

Remake of the 1978 film of the same name. Girl gets brutally gang raped, gets revenge. And it is glorious revenge. Some of it borders on creative, some of it is just pretty much brutal torture porn type stuff, all of it is well deserved.

IMO, it was played way too straight up for my tastes.
I mean, think about it:...Zombie....Beavers.
The very title says ZomCom.
Ah swing & ah miss IMO.

Pretty much my take as well.
The Gothicness is done very well by GDT.
It does feel like it could have actually been based on a Gothic novel.

2015 Horror Marathon

Spoiler!

37. Sphere. Weird mind trippy man in a can underwater spook fest. Great sets.

38. Leviathan. Another man in a can flick, I like it a lot.

39. Army Of Darkness Super fun movie and I'm not a huge Raimi fanboy. It's just over the top all the way with great one liners and action. I'd be real curious to see the crew that remade Evil Dead do this one.

40. Re-Kill. FTV One of the 8 Films To Die For for 2015. It's Starship Troopers meets Walking Dead right down to built in commercials for joining the fight and anti zombie gated communities. Worth a watch for genre fans, I've seen WAY worse z movies over the years.

41. Cold Prey. FTV Norwegian slasher, snowboarders go off trail for thrills and find kills from another killer with parent issues.

2015 Horror Marathon

Spoiler!

43. Murder Party. FTV. Slightly experimental like how Reservoir Dogs was all in one room for the most part but instead of a heist this is an art collective throwing a Halloween party with the intent of murdering a guest. Decent dialogue and a fair amount of gore. It's got that grimy low rent feel mastered. Highly recommended and one of my faves so far this month. Shudder dot com is delivering the horror goods over Netflix and Hulu, well worth the price.

44. Backcountry. FTV. Macho man takes his girl camping, turns out he isn't so macho and a bear eats him alive. Based on true events and an excellent how to on how to not get your old lady to go camping.

Watched a couple of movies tonite with some real hotties.

First up was Hostel 3 (FTV).
IMO, good movie (for horror).

Question: How did "Tennessee Tuxedo" escape the showcase room?
My recording from the SonyHD channel doesn't show it all...one moment he is fighting his buddy and the next he is outside running down a hall.

Also watched Burying the Ex.
Competent movie-making by Joe Dante.
Unfortunately, not enough COMEDY!
Sheesh...

And what is up with Anton Yelchin?
He is 26 and looks at least 10 years older.
Appears to be wearing a hairpiece, and living on vodka and stogies.

14. Return of the Living Dead Pt. II
Not as fondly remembered as the first Return movie and for good reason. Honestly I haven't seen it since I was in middle school, the great punk rock soundtrack was replaced by a metal-ish but less predominant soundtrack, a bunch of in-jokes with returning actors, kid actor in a lead role and Bobby Riggs as the cable guy. Ok, I liked that last part. Plus Mitch Pileggi as Sarge.

Still, will stick to the first next time. Or maybe give the third a second viewing. Didn't care for that one either.

It Came From Outer Space (1953) - A Ray Bradbury sci-fi/horror story that begins with an alien craft crash-landing in the Arizona desert. The townies all think it's a giant meteorite but John Putnam, the desert dwelling star-gazer, sees the ship before it gets covered up in the bottom of it's crater by falling rocks. Nobody believes what John claims to have seen and is quickly labeled a crackpot. Eventually the one-eyed alien slug monsters emerge and start exploring while leaving fading snail trails of glitter-goo behind. The shapeshifting aliens first human contact is with a telephone lineman played by Russel Johnson (aka "The Professor") and his boss while they are out checking the phone lines along the road in the desert. The aliens take the form of the two linemen, steal their truck and head for town.

The creepy theremin mood music and crappy 1950's special effects are dated, yet enjoyable for what they are. This is a 3-D film (Universal's first) so they get a pass on things flying at the camera for no reason. The conflict in this story is two-fold, aliens vs. humans and John vs. the townies. 3-1/2 laser-beam wands.

45. Tales of Halloween. FTV. Perfect Halloween movie. Nearly ever segment was good and there are 10 of them. Truly something for every fan of the genre. It's different than Trick R Treat and slightly more hardcore in the violence department. The common threads are subtle and it's loaded with recognizable people and themes. For example everyone is watching Night of the Living Dead on TV, tombstones have cool shout outs, same groups of trick or treaters appear on the street. Don't miss out on seeing this. I am confident you all will love it given the respect for Trick R Treat here. If I were rating this is a 5 out of 5 whatevers.
