Heads up for Guillermo del Toro fans. The Trilogia de Guillermo del Toro is a 3 movie box set of Cronos, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth given the Criterion treatment. This normally retails at $99.99 but right now Barnes & Noble has a 50% off all Criterion titles sale going. I also had a 20% off coupon, and I have a Barnes & Noble membership so that got me an additional 10% off, so I ended up getting the set for only $36! Even though I already had a Blu Ray of Pan's Labyrinth this was worth it to get the Criterion treatment!

That's a solid list, Apollo! Great stuff and I enjoyed reading your takes on each!

Now that you mention it, yes. I want to see what they do next. I'd like to see a rogue cop focused one. Although it looks as if they are planning to end he purge via a revolution if the current stuff continues.

So happy you saw Murder Party and Father's Day so I'm not the only person who likes them. Astron 6 also did Manborg and a very cool cool giallo called The Editor. Murder Party guy did Blue Ruin a clever low key revenge flick worth a watch and most recently Green Room.

Absolutely! Thanks for the recommendations. Now, you need to watch Nekromantik and Bad Biology Just playing. They're not nearly as good........ but you do seem to have a taste for the bizarre, so who knows.

I've seen both Green Room and Blue Ruin and enjoyed them both but have not seen Manborg or The Editor. Will have to check those out someday.

I started the Nekro one and had to bail. It and Headless made me ashamed to be alive.

Manborg is a complete blast, and has good company with Turbo Kid.

I've been in contact with 247 Horror support since canceling. They are going to be adding some UHD movies. They said some of their movies are actually HD just must not be the ones I selected or they are misreading the Shield like it's a phone. You can try the service for free with ads and they also have a bunch of other venue 247 services. They used to show those at the bottom of the page.

Just can't stay away from horror films I guess. Last night watched the recently added "American Poltergeist", a really strange movie with strange though tolerable "acting". Three axe handles. Netflix also has "American Poltergeist 2".

Fun to watch Robin Weigert resurrect a version of Calamity Jane ("Deadwood") to play a role in American Horror Story this season.

Was planning on seeing Dr. Strange at the 'MAX today. Sadly, a series of unfortunate events put the kibosh on those plans.

My favorites this month were Acolytes, Dark Night of the Scarecrow, We Need To Talk About Kevin, Phantasm V, Trick or Treat, The Witch, The Wailing, and The Collector. All first time views.

There was something very cool about Dark Night of the Scarecrow, not a drop of blood in sight and totally effective almost Stephen King-ish tale of revenge. I found out it was a made for TV flick but it is very well done.

Acolytes was a surprise. Nothing to gory or anything but of a coming of age tale meets a cat and mouse game meets serial killers.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was sheer dread for the total run time, as a parent it hits hard and may be my favorite role of Tilda Swinton. It's an absolutely gorgeous movie with a great visual theme.

Phantasm V, ah, where to begin. It's for fans only but a decent ending to the greatest and most consistent series in horror. If you're gonna make 5 movies this is how you do it. Unlike other franchises where you can only really pick two or three as great, Phantasm takes its mythology as far as you can go. NOES is the only other series that gets close and I love the lower budget DIY of Phantasm.

It's been years since I'd seen Trick or Treat so the nostalgia vote goes here this year. Fantastic soundtrack and that good old loser metal kid vs prep bullies are the basic setup with a dash of satanic backwards records playing. Metal music as a coping mechanism is legit. This would actually pair well DEATHGASM.

The Witch and The Wailing are probably the two top movies I saw this month. Both are super well made and tell great stories. One is more familiar regarding old American witch hunts and the other not so recognizable but compelling nonetheless.

The Collector is a movie I kept skipping because the boxart looked like another cheap torture pron. It sort of is but it's really good. I'm very glad to have given it a chance and enjoyed the sequel.

I keep my reviews short and low detail to avoid spoilers but those here who "know" me and have similar interests should find some value in them. All in all not a bad October. 73 total and that's with a pretty weak week in there. I watched 31 and Conjuring 2 prior to October and love C2 but could leave 31 in the dust. For now Rob Zombie has one ok Halloween movie and Lords of Salem. Wan on the other hand is knocking them out of the park all day long.

Epic list, darthrsg! That's a lot of movies! I wanted to see Train to Busan but didn't get a chance to squeeze it in. Looked intense from the preview.

I liked it but nothing to write home about. I'm kind of over the zombie thing in recent years.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is crazy good. Watched it a few years ago for Horrorfest and it was the first time seeing it since I was a teen. Loved it!

I've been over the zombie thing since the beginning. Just have never been a fan. I think there are a few that I've watched and enjoyed over the years, but I typically avoid them and have never watched any zombie shows on tv.

I loved the old Romero stuff and ROTLD ones but once the Call of Duty crowd got in and it went mainstream it's been pretty downhill. A few bright spots for sure. The good news is vampires have gone underground and that bodes well when they come back. We're getting a few great ones. What We Do In Shadows, Let the Right One In, Only Lovers Left Alive for example.

So you've got the typical overworked scenario of a group of kids go to the countryside for a week and find themselves in a horror situation. A different spin on this is a groups of kids go to Los Angeles to explore the satanic scene there visiting landmarks and black magic shops. You can guess what happens next. Such is the scenario for "Satanic" which was recently added on Netflix. I found it to be a pretty decent horror thriller with some nice cinematography. Four dead crows.

I think some of you have tried Creepster.tv which is another one of these junk horror movie sites. I did for a month back in 2013 after I got my Chromecast. Most of the movies were public domain that they had scrounged up. I took a look at their offerings yesterday and they got a few rarer Giallo movies and some real exploitation films. They need to do an Android TV interface but I bet most of their content is just SD.

Speaking of public domain, I've had this tab open in my browser for about a month.

I know it was mentioned already but the free Vudu stuff is really good. Some good stuff in all the categories and the ads aren't bad yet. Mostly jet dot com and Vudu from what I saw last month.

Watched Ouija: Origin of Evil. Pretty good! Hard to believe this and the first movie are from the same "series."

Worth a watch.

Ended up watching 2 more movies post Halloween as still in the horror mood.

Holidays - 7/10 - Some great stories, some mediocre, others terrible. Overall we still enjoyed watching it and were engaged through out.

The Ghost Breakers - 7.5/10 - Thanks to whomever suggested this in this thread. It was a really refreshing movie to watch. We were VERY engaged throughout, like seriously it felt like only a 30 minute movie because we were entertained so much! Very good story telling and the ghost special effects was cute. Sometimes I wish I grew up in this era as sometimes I wonder if life was better back then outside of segregation. The move was very therapeutic as I was just so wrapped up with it that I forgot all of my worries. I forget that is the point of movies in the end typically. It is still a one time watch type of thing but very glad I watched it.

Lights Out - 8/10 - I don't know if it was because I was really tipsy, since I tried Laphroaig Quarter Cask (Honestly, probably my new favorite whisky now. It is so smooth and like a campfire in your mouth!), but I jumped so many times in this movie. That rarely happens to me so that's why I mainly gave it an 8. I enjoyed it overall and was very engaged but want to watch it again on a surround sound set as we watched it at GF's friends whom does not have a soundbar or HT setup. :c(

I feel much better watching these last 3 movies as the movies I watched on Halloween night were not that great so I was itching for more. Itch has been satisfied... for now anyways muhahaha... :c)

Glad you liked, and thanks for the nice review, as it gives me a good excuse to post some more Paulette Goddard pix!

I'm not sure why Paulette's hair was lightened in the above poster btw, as she is clearly a brunette in the film...

I hesitated a little about recommending this film, because it does contain some antiquated racial stereotypes and humor which would now be considered insensitive or taboo. The humor in some of these old comedies (esp. Hope's comedies) can be quite subversive though. And my recollection is that William (aka Willie) Best, who played the valet, had some of the best lines in the film.

Best plays Hope's valet in Nothing But the Truth as well, and also ends up being the hero of the film. It's not quite as well-done as The Ghost Breakers, but it is funny as hell, and was probably the inspiration for Jim Carrey's Liar, Liar.

According to Wikipedia, Hope described William Best as "the best actor I know" which (knowing Hope) was probably both a sincere compliment, and also a quip, at the same time.

Yes, Paullette is a beauty. Reminds me of my best friends aunt who I had a huge crush on... they are Greek.

Yes, the racial stereotype humor had me taken a back for a few seconds but then checked release date and saw 1940. Glad I did not show this at the party last week where it was all different races, I have a feeling one of them would have a problem with the movie. Regardless, I cracked up several times and some real witty remarks.

FYI, the TV version of The Ghost Breakers is more sanitized, and has some of the more racially charged humor edited out. Still not sure it would play well in mixed company though.

Formerly married to Charlie Chaplin, if you can believe that. And one of the early sirens of the silver screen, nearly lost in the mists of time. (Paulette that is, not your friend's aunt.)

A few more publicity stills from The Cat and the Canary...

Meow.

Speakin of "off-color" humor... I wish I'd seen this little Halloween how-to video by Elvira sooner. Would've made my October decoratin so much easier!

Please don't try this at home kids.

GF and I will definitely have to check out The Cat and the Canary (1939) now. We love all things Cats! One of our favorite Kung Fu movies is Snake In The Eagles Shadow which uses Cat Kung Fu. :c)

I think I liked The Ghost Breakers a little better than Cat and the Canary. But they're both pretty good. And the latter was definitely also one of the high points of my October viewing (even though the sound quality was a little poor on the DVD). Paulette is truly radiant in both.

Another good shot of Hope and Best in Ghost Breakers...

Both films would probably look very nice in HD on Blu-ray if there are still any decent film elements floating around for them.

I watched Satanic last night on NF. Not a bad movie but kinda slow to start. Kids take a detour from Cochella into DTLA (Down Town Los Angeles). To sightsee grisly satanic murder/suicide locations. Well they get what they want, but they will not like it. I think someone mentioned this movie before, iirc Starry Eyes mentioned was the better movie but Satanic isn't bad.
