Off topic but is it me or does the new AVS feel dead? Seems like not as much activity since the change to me.

I'm a bit of a slut when it comes to message boards, I used to be here a lot more back in the days when I was setting up my theater and had lots of questions. Lately I lurk and occasionally post, but in September through October, I'm all over this thread.

That V/H/S movie sounds like it could be cool!

Well the update/forum re-tool basically killed the iPhone/android app so now all we are left with is the tap talk thing which most people hate so people access the forums when they can from a mac or pc.

The movie rental world and horror especially has also been way dry the past 6 months and there is no sight of a tsunami any time soon. We have less than two months to populate 31 days with a blend of new and classic or favorite horror and thus far the new variety is about a scarce as a virgin on prom night.

I'd like to see RZ's new Lords of Salem hit by October but have no idea what the release date is for that. Paranormal also seems to be doing regular Oct releases but that is mediocre. If anyone has a list from bloodydisgusting or dread central, fangoria, etc. of October theatrical and video releases might be worth posting here:D

Saturday night I had NF send me a couple of zombie flicks:
Humans vs. Zombies
Deadlands 2: Trapped
Both of these movies lasted 20 minutes in my Oppo.
Oddly, each was ejected for the same reason: NO tension.
Apparently, neither filmmaker had studied Snyder's great re-make of DotD.
Any recommendations on recent releases for vamps or brain-eaters?
Haven't seen Juan of the Dead yet, but it's in my queue.

This may surprise you, but Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies...did not have much tension either.tongue.gif

Still, glad I purchased as I love the cover art. Cracks me up how serious it is with Abe and these zombies behind him. ($4.99)

Closest vibe I can put on the movie is it reminds me of a history movie you see in middle school. One decent actor and the rest are horrible, with dry narrative and action. I did like that they used basic genre guidelines like establishing a fortified area and embarking on supply or information runs. Also had some Forrest Gumpian plays with historical events and figures - which I always like. The few women in this were attractive and MUCH better actors than most of the guys. All in all, I had fun with the 90 minutes but never any real concern for what was happening or to happen.

The Dead was a little better but still a disappointment. Can't remember the last time a saw a good zombie flic. Still searching...smile.gif

The only thing good about the release.
I couldn't make it 20 minutes.

I probably watched 31 horror movies in July so I'll have to slow way down for the next couple of months or I won't have many new ones to see in October. I have always been a big horror fan but hadn't been watching as many lately because I stupidly only wanted to watch blu rays and many of the new direct to video movies are DVD only on Netflix. I have discovered DVD is still pretty good and I should watch them if it's the only format available.
My favorite horror movie of all time is Lucio Fulci's Zombie. I Grew up in the 80s so I'm a big fan of horror from that decade. I'm sure you guys have already seen these but a few movies I would recommend that I have seen this past month are Laid to Rest, Sweatshop, and Carver. I also really liked a film called Header. I'm not sure I would really define it as horror although the characters were doing some very horrible things. I won't tell you what a header is in case you haven't seen it.
I look forward to sharing my experience with you guys this October and will read thru the thread for your recommendations as I have time.

Sweet! Love me some Fulci. Welcome to the thread! We all pretty much do our own thing and you should definitely join in the fun.

I think Kenobi hit it with the phone app. Using the boards on a PC isn't much different but on a phone the old free app made it easier. I just bookmarked this section on a browser but I can see other people not being bothered because it is a hassle to post. Hopefully this thread doesn't take a hit come October because I love reading everyone else's posts. They could go back to Prodigy and I'd still figure out a way to bother you guys with my junk. biggrin.gif

On a content related note: there looks to be a load of Horror BD's coming out soon. I also heard TCM just released their October schedule and I'm sure there's some good stuff on there.

tbaucom, glad to have you along with us!!! Enjoy!! And yes, a dvd can look damn good if it upconverts well, even on a good-sized set such as my 61" set, i have a lot of horror on dvd rather than bluray.

Anyway, i really look forward to October!!!

Personally the only Alien film I would classify as horror is the first one. The rest are action/sci-fi except Prometheus which is probably just sci-fi. I personally did not like Prometheus and thought it was a big let down this summer. Dark Knight and Avengers sure did set the bar high though!

IMO, they are a weird mix of: Sci-Fi/Action/Horror.
Of course, each movie has a different amount of each element.wink.gif

I think the first Alien is really the one that has a horror feel to it, it's one of the first movies I think of when I think sci-fi horror. I can't help but love Event Horizon though too:p

I'll probably pick up Jeepers Creepers too since I don't have it on dvd and most of these catalog releases these days can be had on release for under $10.

For your consideration:

Really enjoyed this.
Not a slasher movie, more of a psychological horror flick.
Very well done, good performances, good writing.
Recommended (FWIW).

For z-movie fans there is Bloodlust Zombies with some of the worst zombie acting I've seen (and acting period) but it does have it's "moments." wink.gif

Really?
I haven't seen it, but I find it hard to believe it could have worse acting than Abe Lincoln Vs. Zombies.

Asylum will still use professional actors where as "Bloodlust Zombies" most experienced actor was probably Alexis Texas. I watched a little of Abe Lincoln vs Zombies and it was no where near that level of amateur acting. And I've started to watch a few z-movies on Netflix that did play like Jason and his buddies took his dad's camcorder and made a movie over the weekend. But as a friend of mine once said "at least they finished a movie!" Finish indeed. biggrin.gif

I think they are jumping on a marketing scheme to barrage October with a lot of horror film releases both in theaters and on disc. From what I've seen about announced releases it looks like that. These suits will try anything that Harvard business college teaches them. biggrin.gif
