Most of the great rock guitar players mentioned in this thread (although good), still only play within THAT framework. And that's why Hendrix, is Hendrix.
Hendrix is far and away the most original and creative guitar of all time.
NO ONE comes close to his contribution.

Agreed, he was certainly both original and creative. My problem with him is that I detest what he created. It was cacophonic crap to my ears for the most part.

I must admit that I've never been a fan of Hendrix! eek.gif Although I have the greatest respect for what he did and his creativity, his music just doesn't "speak" to me.

Again I do appreciate what he did, but I can't say I like his music. If that sounds reactionary then so be it. Fortunately he hasn't been the only one to go furthur musically, but let's stick to guitarists.

Reactionary? I'm just wondering if you had psyechedlic experiences to help the appreciation along.... smile.gif

Speaking of guitarists and Furthur, just heard about Bob Weir collapsing last night on stage....

Thanks for the heads up. Hope he is OK. frown.gif

Just watched the vid and man he looked out of it. I saw a lot of Dead shows in 94-95 where Jerry had a similar slumped over lifeless type posture and this brought back some chilling memories.

NO ONE comes close to his contribution.

Pin him into his era and style. There are many great Spanish Acoustic players who
don't register in the states. Alan Holdsworth in Fusion (extremely Creative) and John McLaughlin spanned
Jazz & Indian Styles and has perhaps more sheer chops than any player.

In Rock, Jeff Beck has more command of the instrument than his peers but is more concerned
with effect than the herd.

Back to Hendrix - Given his lifestyle and his approach to the instrument, he did something
no one expected. He burned bright in his time. All Time is too tall for any player.

Edit: almost forgot Joe Pass wink.gif

Paul Gilbert is the finest all-around guitar player I have ever seen. He literally can play anything. I have been playing guitar for 30 years and there is no player I have more respect for.

I also have crazy respect for some others not mentioned:

Doug Aldrich
Andy Timmons
Keth Urban
Brad Paisley
Greg Howe
Chris Broderick

Keith recently joined the Rolling Stones on stage at the Staples Center to play "Respectable."

Just stumbled onto this one as well, read through it all and I am surprised no one has mentioned Tony Macalpine - shredder with emotion! My current favorite!
