I don't have much info so this may just be a wasted question but I was listening to a radio station that was talking about a recent DVD release French horror movie. They were saying that it was one of the scariest movies they'd seen in a long time but I can't remember the name. The only thing I really know is that it was a recent US DVD release (like within the last 2 mo.). Are there any French horror experts that can throw a few guesses in? I'm a big horror fan and would like to check it out.

Well, there's lots of French horror movies. With very little info to go on, why don't you just call the radio station? If they're like most radio stations around here, they'll be glad to help you out.

That being said, maybe they were talking about Martyrs? I'm not sure the DVD is out yet...I think it got pushed back til March. I haven't seen it but it got good buzz, I believe

I sent them an email but never got a response. I was hoping that the number of French horror movies with US DVD release over the last couple of months might be small enough to narrow down.

You sure it's not older than just 2 months? THe only titles I can think of are À l'intérieur (Inside) and Sheitan, but they're respectively from 2007 and 2006

I'm not aware of any recent French horror movie releases on DVD (and I usually keep up with that type of info) and Morpheo listed two of the most recent (both good by the way). If the movie isn't "À l'intérieur" (Inside) then I think mproper is on the right track. "Martyrs" has been getting a lot of good buzz and I've been waiting for it's DVD release since I first read about it 6 or 8 months ago.

I've seen varying release dates; HKFlix has it up for pre-order with a 28 April release and I've read release dates for France as 4 March 2009 and for the USA as 24 March 2009.

Amazon.fr has it for pre-order and being released on 3 March, not sure if it will have English subtitles. Amazon.com lists the release date as 24 March but according to Fangoria we won't be seeing this one until April 28th (same date as HKflix).

So looks like either a 24 March or 28 April release for Martyrs, sure would like to get something definite. I'd order the French release if it had English sub-titles.

If this is not the movie you heard about please post what you find out. I love French horror films.

I'd also do as mproper suggested "Call the radio station", who knows when they will get around to answering e-mail. I'd also check and see if the radio station has a web site, they may have the movie listed on their site if they have one.

Thanks all, that gives me at least 3 to look into. I'll give the station a buzz and see if I can confirm one. Airboss is probably right if Martyrs has been getting a lot of buzz.

I've watched some French horror DVDs in the last few months but none of the 3 mentioned. What was the film about in general?

You know, I only caught about half of the discussion so I didn't hear a whole lot on the plot only the DJ's going on about how good it was.

btw - Frontiers looks pretty brutal, is that available on BD or DVD yet? I searched blockbuster but no results.

"Frontier(s)" and "ILS" are both good and both are available on SD DVD from all the online retailers.

I rented both at Hollywood Video if you've got one of those still around. They tend to stock more foreign and second tier films than BB.

Not sure what you mean by 'Real Horror Movies' since there are many types of 'horror' movies. If you mean slice, dice, blood and guts then I would agree, they are not that type of horror movie.

However they do fall in the 'horror' movie genre, with the possible exception of "With a Friend Like Harry" (although many do consider it to be a form of horror.

Rotten Tomatoes Synopsis: WITH A FRIEND LIKE HARRY is a silently terrifying psychological thriller that builds from a sedate family story into a suspenseful horror scenario with the use of smart, spine-tingling dialogue...)

From IMDB:

With a Friend Like Harry - Genre: Comedy | Drama | Thriller

The Brotherhood of the Wolf - Genre: Action | History | Horror | Mystery

Les diaboliques - Genre: Crime | Film-Noir | Horror | Mystery | Thriller
