Hearing about this remake made me dig out my blu of the '87 original and watch it again and it still amazes me as much as it did when the movie came out. The brutal, extreme violence is such an integral part of the story and so well realized on screen, almost like it's the central character, every little detail, and of course every big, gory detail, etc.. I just wonder if a sparkly remake (with a careful dose of CGI blood added in post so it's safe enough for 13-year-olds) is even worth giving benefit of doubt..

I knew ir, that suit clinches it, this remake is SO going to be an Iron Man knock-off. Marvel's success is going to spwan a whole slew of imitators.

I think that's the main reason behind this wave of remakes of movies that don't need to be remade. New ideas are hard to sell, so studios instead are simply reusing the proven "brand name" properties they own. MGM's been really guilty of doing this, I suppose they need to make money any way they can.

Concerning the looks of the suit: I don't think it looks bad, and in full movie mode may even look great. This is not 1987, and although I liked the original Robocop, it's silly to think that we would design something that looks like that in this era. We live in the age of super-strong polymers and are on the verge of self-replicating nano technology. It's not a stretch to think (at least to me) that a suit like this could be even stronger, more durable, and faster - all while weighing less than the original. Times change...and movie remakes have to be concurrent with that. I do agree that it needs an R rating.

I like Ice Cream!

The problem is the suit in the photo looks like every other costume used in recent sci-fi films.
NOTHING original or creative going on here...pulled right off the rack from Fox's wardrobe dept...

The definition of INSANITY is doing the same thing, over and over . . . and expecting a different result each time.

Hollywood's track record for remaking Sci-Fi movies stinks. The movies themselves suck and for the most part are not profitable. All they are showing is how much better the originals are. But they keep doing it. . . . over and over . . .

It's hard to believe they would keep doing it if it's a money losing recipe, it isn't rational.

Can anyone think of a sci-fi remake that exceeded the original?????

Since when is Hollywood rational? Hollywood knows that almost every movie they remake is a pure crap shoot as to whether it will be a success. Hollywood is anchored on hopes and dreams. Very few deliver. Of course, according to them, ALL their movies lose money no matter what the BO take is. rolleyes.gif

Remakes maybe not turn into profit in theater, but they are easy money in terms of rental. Theater acts more like marketing for the rental. Usually you can see what their aim is by looking at the lead actors, if its mostly unknowns they aim the remake for video,

From your link:

Here’s the official synopsis for RoboCop:

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. RoboCop is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Eric Carraro as Executive Producer. The film is currently in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.

I think I'd pay more to see the ostrich robo cop than I would robocop 3. So, this thread has been going on awhile, where is the movie exactly? Sometimes I wonder if there is just a lack of good writers out there or are production companies so set in their ways that the only thing they'll allow to go thru is stupid remakes and sequels. Playing it "safe" is going to end up bankrupting I think because movies are just getting really bad.

Agreed and it will. Not sure about 'bankrupt the studio' tanking. This remake will be forgotten over time, for sure.

There is no dearth of good writing talent, just that most of it seems to be working on some great serialized TV shows.

Yep. They're gonna sink buckets of money into the CGI for this. Then to try and recoup, give it a PG13 rating. It will bomb miserably giving more press to the Spielberg/Lucas prophecy. Peter Weller is rolling over in his grave... and he's not dead yet.

First, remember that this is a remake. Just because the original is a bit bloody, doesn't mean that the remake must have the same approach to be good.

Second, how many here has seen the directors previous movie, Tropa de Elite?

Third, I'm waiting for the trailer.

The script is notoriously bad. REAL bad.

The studio has been treating the director like David Fincher shooting Alien3. No secret.

This is a massive train wreck. The subject matter cannot be told with a PG-13. There is no one size fits all and Hollywood is going to burn itself down in denial of that very fact.

An R rated film just opened at #1 obliterating it's PG-13 competition. If the film is good and marketed right, an R can dominate.
