A hollywood remake these days you are almost guaranteed it will ruin a franchise. Look at Nightmare on elm street, die hard, superman, spiderman

They take all the violence, language and sex out of these 80's movies and tone it down to pg-13 just to make money with the teens.

When I was a teen they didnt care about this and rated r movies were in abundance and they were good

That was my reaction too but I think he's referring to the last 2 Die Hard films, which were PG-13. In fact the only true remake in the list is Nighmare On Elm Street, Spider-Man and Superman are reboots and Die Hard was never remade (yet?...)

It's only a matter of time before that violation occurs. Just as soon as Bruce Willis loses his clout in Hollywood and therefore his ability to protect that franchise, the suites will grease themselves up and have at it.

While the most recent Die Hard sequel was a total piece of garbage, it was in ract R-rated. The only PG-13 entry in that franchise is the fourth, Live Free or Die Hard.

New trailer is up, while I don't think it will touch the original. I think it can stand on its own.

I really like the trailer. It looks like there is enough of a story development - much like Batman Begins. I'll give this a try in the theater.

There are many remakes that were done right. I would not excuse all remakes. Like all movies there are good remakes and bad remakes. Why not let the younger generation have a chance to see a modern Robocop?

I really like the fresh take on Robocop where he doesn't move like molasses anymore. This Robocop is fast like a bionic cheetah. The younger generation (sigh) would laugh if the modern day Robocop moved like he was pop-locking.

Might be okay. The tech and action stuff should be fine for updating, but the tone of the original is nowhere to be found - probably because some things just can't be replicated.

agree. Times change. A 18 year old watching the original Robocop would probably say it lame or fake looking. We did the same when we were 18 also.

I see no harm with making remakes for new generations as the world changes (technology, social/politcal norms, ect)

Yeah. Right up to the part when Murphy or Johns gets blown away.

I didn't mean that they shouldn't do a remake, just that they shouldn't reuse the original movies script and just add some more CGI and explosions, and hope that they have made better movie.

And with THIS particular remake, it's a case of taking one of the signature Paul Verhoeven movies, with his R-rated black comedy and violence, and turning it into PG-13 pablum.

The best remakes work when they go beyond the original material (especially lower-grade movies), not simply repeat/regurgitate it. John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly are twp great examples, taking two corny 50's sci-fi movies and turning them into R-rated horror pieces.

It's a shame, with Robocop and Total Recall, they basically did the opposite.

We now know who she takes after! smile.gif The real question is - What does she think about the original Robocop, if she had seen it?

Heck no, she isn't seeing it! She actually hasn't watched a single frame of the original and won't be allowed to for years to come. Her father pulled up the trailer and she watched over his shoulder. I was there and burst out laughing when she read my mind.

Well, I just so happened to have been in a screening of Thor 2, and the Robocop trailer played in front of the main feature. There were the usual gaggle of rawdy teens in the back row, and I overheard them say "whoa.. cool!" FWIW. We shall see how this turns out.
