I realize that I'm in a minority with that opinion, but when I saw it opening weekend, I was flabbergasted at how awful and shoddy a film it was. I swore it would be a massive bomb. I still don't understand what people see in it.

Josh, you definitely are in the minority on that one. Most people will look at you like you have two heads. Gladiator is a stunning achievement. I watch it once a year, at least.

I agree with you on LEGEND, but much of the blame goes to Scott capitulating on the screenplay and listening to the studio,m which wanted a more family friendly picture. he helped create the mess.

BLACK RAIN is a guilty pleasure. I love it, but don't know why considering the stupid leaps in logic it takes throughout.

Thelma & Louise is a terrific film.

1492: Conquest of Paradise. Ditto on your take. What a bore.

G.I. Jane does not exist in this dojo.

By the way, to Lee Stewart... ALIEN is in his top three. I could possibly put it in front of Blackhawk Down. They are such different films. Franlky, my entire top three for Scott could be interchangeable.

P.S. I really liked ROBIN HOOD and only felt the PG-013 rating held it back.

I'm part of that minority, and in general agreement that Scott is not the director he once was.

Now if I had that on DVD I would not admit to owning it. I saw it on VHS years ago when VHS ruled the Earth.

Some of the above are great classics for sound in my books.

Black Rain now the bluray is not close to theatrical the surrounds sound like they have been faked into stereo surrounds by stripping the left and right fronts and lairing them onto the original mono surrounds.

I had the region 2 DVD years ago around 2000? I thought the surrounds was screwed up as they only faded in as and when and took the DVD back to shop.

I now know that is was intentional as 70mm or some early SR-D releases have the surrounds active as and when and in Dolby Stereo matrix the surrounds all the channels are always active except 70mm or SR-D totally different ballgame.

I might buy the early region 1 DVD as I prefer original true Dolby film mixes after all that is what home cinema is all about recreating the original experience in the home!

Thelma & Louise I like that Dolby mix nice atmospheric sounds of being on the road with two girls.

Black Hawk Down "fking Irene" need I say more.

LEGEND only seen it once on VHS not again please.

ALIEN is the cats hairy bollocks, hands down classic sci-fi!

1492: Conquest of Paradise I'd sooner jump to the end credits and wait for the Dolby Stereo SR logo now that was the coolest part of the whole film for me.

Yup. I'm not a frothing fan of Gladiator but it's quite entertaining. Though I never did like Ridley's choice of the cool blue cast to Rome. It never felt right at all. It's just about the last way Rome actually feels when you are there and I found it somewhat distancing.

Same here. It's just groan-worthy. I mean, Michael Douglas' whole "bike-lovin' macho, rebel dude" act is film-length groan-worthy stuff. And yet, there are some really cool scenes and vibes here and there, with some gorgeous footage in Japan. And one thing Ridley IS consistant about: producing great Bad Guys - I love watching Yƻsaku Matsuda in that film - shot as always with Ridley's combo of "cool" and menace.

BTW...I was testing out my JVC projector last night, threw on Alien and as always got sucked into watching it late into the night. What a freaking perfect movie. Ridley creator-of-worlds! And I never tire of the adult, often reserved and nuanced performances in that movie.

That's something we would have to ask to a person who's been there 2000 years ago.

I only hope that the script ends up more clever than that.

Yeah, that too. That the big SF mystery that the writers think is so profound, original, and deep, is in truth nothing of the sort. But we will see. I'm still optimistic, but with a big dose of caution.

I just hope that RS isn't using this movie as a tool to make anti-religion statement. If he did, you know it's going to be a flop because the politics surrounding such issue will overpower the sci-fi entertainment aspect.

It's just my speculation based on the plot revealed so far. When the plot deals with the beginning of human race as stated about this movie ("The search for our beginning could lead to our end."), it's hard to escape the clash with that of the religious side. I hope he doesn't because the movies I've seen which deal with such issues, turned out silly or stupid. Even if RS does, can he pull it off? Possibly, but based on his work last 10 years, he may have lost his edge. For that matter, it may be a safer bet for the movie if he doesn't.

Actually, it seems more likely the movie is making an anti-evolution statement (especially considering Scott's kind of surprising comments in terms of his skepticism about the scientific account of life on earth - not that Scott is a young earth creationists or anything...).

He didn't make it sound like that at the Q&A I went too in Anahiem

I still don't get it....
Should Hollywood movies stop doing sci-fi and do only biblical epics?

Guess I'm just old school....I have always thought religion belongs in the church, not in the entertainment industry.
OTOH, maybe religion now considers itself to be part of the entertainment industry?

I agree. I don't think R. Scott is making any deliberate "real" comment on human origins - I think whatever philosophizing occurs in the movie, or from Scott in interviews, in the service of the movie. He's not professing to do science, just makin' a summer flick.
