And the runtime can also be a factor. I remember after the truncated 2 1/2 hour WATCHMEN failed to meet expectations, Warners publicly stated that they would never make an R-Rated super-hero film again. (I find it amusing that the Batman films are rated PG-13, but the comic books are easily a hard R!)

What?
It's been many years since I looked at Batman comic book but unless they changed over the years, do you mean they show boobies and use F word?

No F-bombs (tho occasionally it's alluded to) but the violence is often easily hard R. (I have one here where Joker has dismembered a senator...a far cry from DARK KNIGHT where Joker's mayhem is bloodless and mostly off-screen.) As for boobies, usually silhouetted in some books. The graphic novels might even go a bit further. The Nolan movies are kiddie stuff in comparison. Even back in the 80s, I remember Frank Miller's DARK KNIGHT being fairly bloody. (I recall a broken Batarang or something even sharper embedded in the Joker's eye.) Was there even one drop of blood in the DARK KNIGHT film?

Even THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE is R rated reading. Very violent. But what you can imagine and what you can show visually are not one and the same.

WOLVERINE as a PG-13 character doesn't quite work. BATMAN can. BLADE needs to be R and FOX should take note of those films when thinking about WOLVERINE.

Does anyone really think a hard nosed R rated WOLVERINE would fail to open huge? PuuuLease!

Frank Miller's Dark Knight is infinitely R rated in tone, but it would never be filmed that way.

I think what you mean is that what can be visually illustrated/depicted in print can't (or rather won't) be shown on film, due to the ratings system and box-office concerns. (Remember all the fuss over BATMAN RETURNS...to the point that McDonalds pulled their promotions? I think that was the last time any blood appeared in a Batman film). And yes, I agree that Batman can work as PG-13. But it would also work as an R, as it does in the comics.
We'll never see that, of course (except possibly in the video games, though I've never seen those). PROMETHEUS, on the other hand, certainly needs the R, if only in keeping with the earlier films.

Forgot about Gibson's Catholic torture porn....although I assume Matrix is fairly high up the chart of money making R-rated films.

You now have the answer to your question. The link shows highest grossing R rated films.

As far as THE MATRIX - it's number 16. #2 is THE MATRIX RELOADED

From the very first films, I have been a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of everything Aliens and Predators.
Primarily, because of the sci-fi SUSPENSE/TERROR (yeah, the critters are pretty cool too).

I have been waiting for a new chapter for a long time, and want to be surprised/shocked/scared with popcorn slung around my chair at the cineplex once again.

Larry, just SAY NO to any more Promotheus trailers....

You can always rent AVP2.

Good movies are as rare as an on topic discussion.

IMO . . .

The reason for all the trailers and their length is to get across the message that there won't be any Aliens in the movie.

The movie was originally "billed" as a prequel to ALIEN. It really isn't.
