MtM wasn't forgotten. Not by me. I still have mental scarring from that one. Just talking about it is making the beer splash out of my frosted glass when I pick it up with my trembling hand. As bad as I think Prometheus is, it's still more watchable than Mars. Damn...

True. But you can make that interpretation, especially, with knowledge of various RS interviws, deleted/alternate scenes etc.

Then, after running around the tunnels to Benny Hill, one of the "scientists" does the Walter Huston happy dance when they find the penis alien.

You sound very authoritative. Maybe you are the leading figure around here so let me ask you this since I couldn't get the answer out of those naysayers including your pupil, sb1. What criteria is there that can be an indication of a movie being a success or a failure? Box office numbers, professional critics rating or something...? Is there some objective data that can gauge it?

No no, that's just a superficial similarity. You put an android in one, and that's the true mark of originality! Nothing else matters once you put an android in there!

And if they sent a Space Jesus, wouldn't he have been a giant muscled up albino? If we evolved from the black goo then the engineers couldn't have "made" a normal everyday human right off the bat. And since we're on a religious note, I'll just say this: God this movie sucked. So many small things done wrong that could have easily been changed...

You're very right. Last night I lay down in my bed, pondering the possibilities. The deep meaning, if you will, of this epic cinematic event. No sleep for me, not now. I must find out the truth. I leaned over to wake my wife. Her slumber was the deepest sleep she's yet attained, but she woke readily, almost aware that Prometheus was on my mind. In all likely hood, it was on hers too. We look at each other for an extended time. No words. Just the shared knowledge of what we'd witnessed together on the screen. Do I simply call it what it is? Pure magic. She whispers gently as she probes my pupils with her own in the low light. "Prometheus", she says. Choked and at a loss for words, I can only nod. A tear forms.

Whose to say all engineers are physically huge? Or, seems easy, to me, to believe their advanced technology could allow one of them to pass amongst humans 2000 years ago. It is true the movie did not say it was the Jesus crucifiction 2000 years ago that made such an upheaval amongst the engineers, but is awfully coincidental and part of what makes this movie fun for me. Too bad there were so many small, and not so small, things done wrong that could have been easily fixed.smile.gif

Perhaps Ridley achieved his true goal - make a movie that will have folks bitching about it online for months...maybe years, just like Lucas did.

And its not just about the story that make a movie feel orginal. Its the entire product. A Fistful of Dollars may be a remake of Yojimbo. But the entire combination of Eastwood, Leone and Morricone was just pure magic.

And in a time when 99% of all scifi movies takes place in front of a greenscreen with lots of explosions. Prometheus felt fresh. Exploring themes of the more golden age of scifi. Also Prometheus explore much deeper themes then just "we were made by aliens".

And by the way, yes the subtle Jesus hint made the movie better. I love subtle things in movies.

Thanks for the permission to have an opinion.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. If you liked it, good for you. There's nothing in it for me whether you liked it or not. Facts? This was not a documentary.
I certainly will partially base my opinion on imagination. But on the films imagination not mine. Sci-fi and fantasy films are personal favorites. I really appreciate it when they
show creativity and imagination. When they're intelligent and well thought out. Combined with great visuals and good acting you should have a winner. It seems some people
feel that all those elements are not required with movies in these genre This one looked nice, but for me fell well short on the rest. There are more than enough poorly
conceived, badly written, lousy acted, sci-fi and fantasy films out there. If I want to see one like that, all I have to do is watch a SyFy original. They pump them out like an
assembly line. I'm just tired of films in this genre relying on visuals and neglecting other critical elements. I didn't expect to see one from Ridley Scott.

For better or worse, I've read and contributed about all I can as it relates to this movie.

The whole Jesus-was-an-Engineer angle is a retcon, IMO. That's not unusual for Ridley Scott. He apparently tried to retcon Decard into a replicant years later in one interview when reminiscing on Blade Runner. That's led to years of spirited debate as to Decard's humanity and has helped keep the Blade buzz alive.

Besides, the values of the Engineers aren't exactly the same ones Jesus was pushing, if I remember my Sunday School lessons. They're a pretty anger-prone and homicidal bunch, not to mention genocical. It's a big stretch to make that comparison and it doesn't really fit.

But that doesn't mean you have to leave Jesus completely out of it. I'm of the impression they simply observed what happened with Him and decided then to shut down the earth experiment - can't win 'em all. That especially fits if you're of the opinion that Jesus was simply a prophet and not the Son o' God. The Engineers are the gods in the Alien universe.

Any way to potentially tie the engineers to such an iconic event adds to the fun aspect of the movie for me. Whether Jesus was one of them or they were just apalled at the treatment of him etc.

One of the things that put off some of the folks I originally saw this with was how hog wild, ballistic the engineer goes against David, Weyland and all. The first images you see of the enginners are commercials with the elder engineers solemly standing around in robes and the the younger one does his duty with quiet dignity. They appear to be a highly advanced race with far superior technology - yet the engineer attacks these much smaller, peaceful humans like a dog. So, for my friends, it did not seem to jive. I can try to explain it that he realizes they are from Earth, meant for destruction, or they are not worthy to be his peer in a Nietszche Overman way and so treats them like animals, or perhaps he sees the potential peril that if they got this far they could have face huggers in them or comandeer his ship to take somewhere more damaging to his people - so he HAS to act fast. RS says they are just aggressive bastards...tongue.gif

True, but I actually enjoy BR more by believing Deckard is a stealthy artificial.

That's true to a point....
However, God the Father and Jesus the Son are the same entity, and God the Father was also "anger-prone, homicidal, and genocidal" in the Old Testament.

The Engineers certainly played the role of Great Creators and may have considered themselves to be Gods.
If that is the case, I doubt they would think much of Earth religions.
Perhaps they were susceptible to the Jealous Gods Syndrome and the worshiping of a false prophet may have been too much for them to bear.wink.gif

I looked at them ( These guys stuck on LV 223 )as they're being soldiers more, or so than the guys from the beginning. In the delete scenes the Engineer looked disgusted when talking to Weyland. Initially when seeing it at the theater I thought the reaction was mostly fear, like when their a bat flying around your home!

I guess that is the point, we really aren't shown his full motivation and would have been fun to have a bit more background

That was my take from the theater as well.

Bats are kind of freaky...biggrin.gif

IF the next one does get made, I am thinking there wil be various factions of engineers - some that may even help Shaw and David.
