I agree that the IMAX discussion seemed entirely appropriate to me, too. After all, Mission Impossible 4 was shown in IMAX theaters. Anyway, if things get too far off topic, we can count on the moderators to tell us so. In the meantime, is it too much to ask if we just can't all get along?

I guess the alternative would be for the mods to moderate at a Nazi-style level....
Anyone in favor of that?

AVS needs a general discussion section! A few of us were just talking about this in a DIY speakers thread.

I know the mods say it would be too hard to police or some crap but it would help keep all the rest of every thread on the entirety of AVS from constantly going off topic.

Would be nice, I think.

Nope not the alternative. The alternative is to chat in a way that might occur in a masters or PhD seminar where we just act like adults and stay on topic. I mean, a lot better than opening a thread about MI4 and finding people complaining about their comcast bill for three pages.

In this forum, for example, when you see the topic is the film, open a thread in another forum regarding the technical issues of IMAX using this particular presentation as the example.

I like some of the OT stuff; they can interesting and insightful. Especially when many of these trailers we see and discuss aren't opening for another 20 or 30 years. I'm more of a stickler when the movie has opened and 2 or 3 pages have little or nothing to do with the subject matter.

Whether AVS starts another general discussion section or not, we will always have OT comments in threads. Death. Taxes. OT in threads.

I share Art's frustration with OT stuff that goes on and on, ad nauseam, but have come to kind of enjoy a lot of it. After all the alternative is madness. If you can't whip em, join em, right?

Well see, I enjoy the AVS community and it would be fun to have tons of 'off topic' discussions about other things besides AV stuff in an area where it's okay.

Every other forum on the planet has one!

This has been discussed over the years.
IIRC, the owners of AVS do not want it, for fear of upsetting or offending the personal views of sponsors (at least I think that's what Larry said).

I think that's fair actually. Cause it would inevitably end up politics or religion related, in other words the end of courtesy within the AVS community and the beginning of war how about that for going OT? ...I love Tom Cruise!

I agree. The beauty of what I perceive to be the policies of our moderators is that they maintain a generally laissez faire attitude toward the topicality of posts but come down hard on posts they find to be excessively controversial, offensive, or abusive. Works for me.

Speaking of war. We did have the Iraq War forum on AVS where a few people had their life threatened, so its probably best we stick to things we can all agree on; like $1,000 p/ft. speaker wire is much better than that $1 stuff you can by at the hardware store. It provides considerably better transparency and dynamics and eliminates harshness and greatly increases clarity. Its true. Truuust me.

I wasn't aware of that.
But not surprising.
All over the internet that went on.
AFAIK, nothing ever came of the thousands (millions?) of threats.
People talk BIG, and deliver little...it's the American Way.

Now, back to the topic at hand....
Although TC is pushing 50, he still delivers when called upon.
Someday he will have to go more sedate roles.
Fortunately for him, he DOES have acting talent.

I read or heard somewhere that he really wants to do his stunts himself because, among other things, he sees CGI in action movies as a rather uneffective effect, and he much prefers the audience to actually see and feel that someone is actually doing it. Which is indeed a much, much more satisfying experience from an audience standpoint. Having seen MI4 twice and being myself afraid of heights, I just can't figure how he did it, but it does take some balls! it's the proof of his integrity towards his audience; people can say or think whatever they want of him, this can't be denied either imo.

He is kind of a fearless guy.
You have to admire that about him, to be certain.

He has appeared in roles where he isn't THE BIG ACTION STAR.
Tropic Thunder, Lions for Lambs, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry Maguire come to mind.
The guy CAN act.

Great movie! Really enjoyed this although I was a little disappointed that Ving Rhames and Maggie Q weren't part of his team this go around. I really enjoyed Simon Pegg and it was great to see Blomkvist visiting US cinema Jeremy Renner was also great. This will be a day 1 purchase when it hits blu.

MI4 also has scenes that were shot in 15/70 IMAX so I do believe is is approproate. It is only the 3rd Hollywood film to ever use IMAX shot footage:
