only reason to re-watch the bd is to try and figure out what's up with the disk and why are we getting people posting about the pq being all over the place -

reference or ordinary.

IIRC, in our BD Forum someone found out there is 2 different bit rates (depending on which release it is).
That totally blows.

The release I have looks and sounds terrific.

Which one is that? I got the Best Buy special edition version. Only the movie is on one disc.

So no variable aspect ratios like The Dark Knight - too bad.

For $20 launch day pricing it was a good deal. I'm glad I saw the deal and was able to cancel my Amazon order in time.

The reason I had ordered it was for all of the extras. The regular version only had a few extras which I think is on the BD along with the movie. Which might explain the lower bitrate. While the Best Buy version has the movie only on one disc and all the extras on a separate disc.

tell me about it, I bought *BOTH* ....thinking at first the 3-disc was a U.S only BB exclusive. that's how I was able to compare the bitrates... ....A few days later I found out futureshop is taking care of the exclusive edition up here, so I got it too. I can't help it, it's an illness lol I will now have to sell my 2-disc...

Sorry, I did not.

As a general rule, I want my movies to stick to ONE aspect ratio (there are always exceptions).
TDK's changing AR felt like a "gimmick" and screwed up my Suspension of Disbelief (always important with Superhero movies).

The movie was shown in premier theaters (IMAX) in changing aspect ratios as that was the way it was shot. It was transfered to BD in the same manner.

If you had seen TDK or MI4 at an IMAX theater, I guarantee you would not be typing what you did. It is your ignorance not experience that caused you to type what you did.

I thought the only reason TDK switched aspect ratios was because the entire movie was not filmed in IMAX. Only the IMAX filmed parts filled the entire screen.

The second Transformers movie did the same thing. Only certain scenes were filmed in IMAX.

I hate variable aspect because it flat out does not serve its intended purpose for CIH systems. This is the reason they have a constant aspect version for non IMAX theaters and the same option should be available for ALL variable aspect blus IMO.

I never watch it anymore because of that and my 2.35:1 screen. Plus, after the hype died down, the movie didn't hold up well for me. Can't even say I want to see TDK even if it was shown in a constant ratio.

MI4 was good, but nearly as good as I was expecting based on word of mouth and reviews. Sounded great, though.

Chances are very good that I was drinking when I posted the above.

My daughter dragged me to see this in the theater, she knows I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, the man not the actor. In spite of myself I enjoyed it enough to buy the Blu-ray and screened it for friends last Friday. They loved it. Dumb yes, but quite an adrenalin rush for first time viewers. The scene where Cruise's character leans out the high rise window before climbing out (on my 120" screen) brought back my vertigo. However I can understand why some people don't care for this flick.

I wouldn't say your opinion is ignorant but most people who like OAR and defend that to the death. Movies like Brainstorm get defended that it should retain the multiple AR's but not newer movies that are OAR with multiple aspect ratios.

Anyway, I like OAR and the multiple aspect is sort of a gimmick but it is a gimmick that works, imho. In MI:4 when Ethan steps up to the window and the camera slowly pulls up to him and out the window, in IMAX the aspect opens from 2.40 to ... w/e and it is quite and effect.

I have seen TDK and Transformers 3 in IMAX and I hate the variable aspect ratio for TDK, and am happy TF3 doesn't have a variable aspect ratio. To be honest I was not a big fan of either movie in IMAX. The non-IMAX scenes had horrible PQ and the aspect ratio change distracted me every time. And yes, I watched them in a real IMAX.

Why does changing ARs on TDK "pales in comparison" in my HT?
We're talking about ARs, not screen size.

With all due respect, I don't understand your point....

I am a firm supporter of OAR too.
In fact, I won't buy a disk that isn't; Black Bars are fine with me.

Like the use of shakey cams and quick cuts, which are in vogue these days, Nolan's use of the IMAX shots felt "gimmicky" to me.
Those shots added nothing to the movie itself.
He was simply drawing attention to himself (ego), rather than advancing the story.

Yeah, shaky-cam is the devil.

Well... sometime you should see a proper IMAX cuz the extra resolution is extrodinary. Even if you don't care for the extra screen area, go just for the extra resolution. Maybe when Rises comes out.

I do go to IMAX theaters on occasion (sometimes the audio is so loud it's distracting) and DO love the extra rez.
