Tom Cruise and J.J Abrams return for a 4th one! That's great news, I like all 3 films, but the 3rd is the best (thanks to Philip Seymour Hoffman as the bad guy)

Updating and making official a story from last week, Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams will join forces again for a fourth Mission: Impossible. Putting aside for a moment the fact that none of the three previous missions proved to be impossible, there was real doubt that the series would continue at Paramount after boss Sumner Redstone discarded the star and his decade-plus relationship with the studio.

To me the first one is still the best, and I hope they go in that direction with it. Or at least combine elements of the first and third.

I LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 3rd one bombed yet they are still making a 4th? Brilliant!

MI3 didn't exactly bomb, it could have done better that's for sure, but its success was eclipsed by Tom Cruise's antics at that time. That's also why Redstone go rid of him, after the semi box office failure of MI3 (I think it could have gone past 200 millions easily). Now is the different time, and I'm sure Paramount and Redstone will be glad to do a 4th, because I'm pretty sure Tom Cruise won't do the same mistakes twice. One just have to look at his career to understand he's not exactly the dumbest person on earth, which doesn't prevent him from being silly once in a while.

[edit]Besides, after Star Trek, J.J Abrams' name alone almost warrants a profit... Just like Christopher Nolan...

Depends what you call silly. Jumping up and down on the couch or calling out the entire medical industry, because of over medicating children? The first one is silly, the second is spot on.

Agreed. I was thinking of a couch-like type of silliness...

I can't stand Emmanuelle Béart, and Kristin Scott-Thomas didn't have enough screen time

I thought all three had weaknesses and strengths, but overall they are all good.
The third one was a bit too personal for a "spy movie", so hopefully that theme won't continue.

It seems they're simply working off JJ's name at this point to keep the MI name viable.

Blu Ray... 3-D TV... 4K... I Like New STUFF!!!

It made almost 3 times its budget.

Not even close to a 'bomb'.

(It made 134 million in the U.S. and about double that overseas)

M:I-3 was still successful, despite coming in below the other films. I look forward to this and hope it's in line with the first and the third films, both of which I really like a lot.

i think in this one, the enemies of Tom Cruise character are punshied, but not by guns and gadgets, but by taking them to court and by posting lies about them everywhere.

The first MI, I liked and thought it was a really good movie. I thought the 2nd one was a damn over-stylized joke. The 3rd one was decent enough, I guess. Certainly nothing special. Don't really see the need for a 4th. Again, we see Hollywood 'fessing up that they've run out of original ideas.

Stephen.

Chances are very good that I was drinking when I posted the above.

I'm glad J.J. Abrams is involved (even as co-producer), but I guess that means the actors will be doing lots of running (a la 'M:I:3', 'Cloverfield' and 'Star Trek').

The 2nd one was a caricature of John Woo's films... directed by John Woo. I think that was the main problem.

I'd actually prefer a return to the style of the first film ,that was the only 'spy-like' entry in the series. Without the overly convoluted plot, though....

Too many systems and games....not enough time or money!

The first one was fabulous. John Woo didn't really get the chance to make his directors version of the second one but it had some good moments.

Third one was better than the second but not as good as the first.

I look forward to a fourth one but hope JJ makes a Trek sequel or has signed up to a Trek sequel.

MI1 - intelligent, suspenseful, emotional\\story intensity, well executed, just awesome
MI2 - mid-air motorcycle joust. ya, really. just awful.
MI3 - combined the intelligent, suspenseful atmosphere of the first with stylized action of the second (only done well)

MI3 was easily the best of the 3 (overall), largely due to JJ's incredible talent. I can't wait to see what he can do with the 4th now that he's had a few movies under his belt (MI3 was his directorial feature debut btw).

I thought the 3rd was pretty good. But when I tried to watch again I got bored. I stopped it midway through, and was planning on watching the rest the next day, but I never have, four months later. What's strange is I usually enjoy watching movies of that type a 2nd time. But this one didn't work. I'll try it again some day.

Overall, I think all three Mission Impossible movies were OK, but not outstanding.

But a 4th one is still good news, because it at least will probably be semi-decent, which is more than you can say for a lot of movies.

Tom Cruise has signed on for 'Mission Impossible IV'

Paramount has confirmed an initial report from DeadlineHollywood.com that Tom Cruise is attached to star in Mission Impossible IV. He will also produce the film, which will bow over Memorial Day weekend in 2011, with J.J. Abrams, the director behind the last iteration of MI. The studio is currently out to directors and as previously announced, Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec has been hired to write the script. The duo previously worked with Abrams on his ABC drama Alias. Script details are being kept under wraps and no start date has yet been established though Cruise is planning on making this his next project.

I'm all for a 4. I would like the main mission to be a bit more team oriented. Obviously it is going to star Tom, but I like it when the team matters, have real parts to play - not just props for Tom to do his thing.

That, and no face masks.
