This looks fun. Denzel vs Gary Oldman can't wait!

I'll be reviewing it on Thursday Jan. 14th. Hopefully it's interesting. I don't know much about it, other than it takes place in a post-apocalyptic earth and Denzel seems to have some kind of secret that Kunis' character wants to learn.

Watched the trailer. Looked like Denzel had the last remaining printed copy of The Bible, and everyone wanted it as the secret to restoring the world.

The bible? Really?? I hope that's not the case.

Thanks Lee, but I'm wondering why the renegades/gangs will want the bible. Just makes no sense.

Makes perfect sense, Denzel would say.

johnathanwinter noted the lead character's name is significant. Since some may not get it, here's some info from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah

could it also be the book of deeds or judgement?

Nope. It’s clearly THE book. The movie takes place in 2043, and mentions 30 years of winter, so that would make the “end of the world” the winter of 2012-2013. I suspect the Myans would get a good laugh out of all the apocalyptic crap that is so prevalent today.

BTW, I didn’t see Brit Hume’s name in the cast list.
IAM4UK's Avatar IAM4UK 07:21 AM 01-05-2010
As this movie is science fiction (or some kind of fiction), the book could be anything for the purpose of the story. But Denzel would likely be attracted to the story more if it were THE Book (as Aliens cleverly referred to it). Denzel and THE Man are tight...

Anyway, I'm interested in this one, primarily for Mr. Washington's contributions. He makes movies better than they otherwise might be--see "Ricochet" for a great example of a super performance in an otherwise insanely bad movie.

Well, the movie is called The Book of Eli, so I guess it's probably not referring to the Bible, but to either a book that was/is owned by an "Eli" (in which case it could be the Bible) or a book that was written by or about a personage or prophet (or even a deity) named Eli. "Eli" (more properly pronounced "Ay-lee") is the Hebrew for "My God," the words that Jesus cried out from the cross. See The Gospel According to Matthew 27:46 and Psalm 22:1 (22:2 in the Hebrew text).

eweiss, "Eli" is the name of Denzel's character. And apparently, the book he has that everyone wants is the Bible.

That reminds me of a superb scene from a movie called "The Apostle," directed by Robert Duvall. Billy Bob Thornton intends to drive a bulldozer through Duvall's church. Duvall stops him by putting the Bible in his path. Superlative acting in that scene, and a very tense and powerful dramatic moment. Highly recommended viewing.

The Apostle was a great movie. It was the first movie I've seen that dealt with the hypocrisy that exists within all humans and that is especially attributed to religious people, and it dealt with this issue in a way that was both fair and humbling. The scene of Duvall witnessing to others on the chain gang was very profound to me. Duval was both a sincere Christian *and* a murderer, and so we all fall short of the glory of God and all that jazz.

As far as Eli goes, I find it odd that the trailer shows people trying to stomp Eli into next week so they can (presumably) steal his Bible! Talk about hypocrisy!

Well, then, they should have used more normal English and called the movie ELI'S BOOK.

On the other hand, maybe Denzel's character's real name is Earl, and they call/nickname him "Eli" because he carries The Book of Eli.

eweiss, you know the quirks of linguistics far better than I, and so you should appreciate the slight play-on-words in the title. It does make it sound like one of the books of a compilation like the Bible...

gremmy, you'd be interested in the supplements on the DVD for that one, if you've not checked them out. Duvall had to make that movie without studio support, in spite of his resume and credentials. The topic was deemed box-office poison. You'd also be interested to know that the young man who played Duvall's assistant at his church

On a related note to your spoiler, they say that during the filming of the Pentecostal church scene in GANJA & HESS, Duane Jones really did get zapped by the Holy Spirit; i.e., his acting went beyond acting to responding to what was happening to him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySrlK...eature=related

That was a real church and a real pastor and congregation and service, from what I recall.

It looks like the whole movie - uncensored, too (e.g., the full frontal male nudity at the end in part 11/11) - is posted on YouTube for you to watch.

The Book is the Bible - the last copy, in fact ("The other copies have been destroyed as taboo, since religious conflict inspired the nuclear holocaust."), per the review today in the Dallas Observer.

I wonder, eweiss, whether in this post-apocalyptic fictional story other religious tomes have likewise been destroyed as taboo...

Denzel is a sure-fire winner, and I'll be watching this movie Saturday.

The Dallas Observer didn't seem to particularly like the film. Which means I'd probably like it a lot!!

The trailer looks cool (like most other trailers), but I'm not overly optimistic about it. Looks like it may have some stuff in there to please the masses (ridiculous action), which has been taken care of by 95% of the movies out there now. Gary Oldman seems to gravitate towards this type of role, and I honestly think he should try something else if possible.
