"Pontypool" - "The story is about "Shock jock" Grant Mazzy who has, once again, been kicked-off the Big City airwaves and now works at the only job he could get hosting the early morning show at CLSY Radio in Pontypool Ontario, which broadcasts from the basement of the small town's only church. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellations due to yet another massive snow storm, things quickly turn deadly when reports of people having bizarre seizures, developing strange speech patterns and evoking horrendous acts of violence start piling in."

Action freaks and those seeking the usual 'zombie gore' will not find it in "Pontypool". What you will find is a very original, daring, enchanting and claustrophobic 'Zombie' flix. Those that enjoy something a little different and don't mind a dialog driven film which builds the suspense slowly should find this to be a very entertaining film. If you liked "The Man From Earth" you will probably like "Pontypool". The two movies are completely different except for the fact that both rely on dialog more than action.

"Pontypool" is a fresh and entertaining break from the usual 'horror' films of today and has been described as 'intellectual horror'. As one reviewer noted; "Pontypool is a mash-up of Orson Welles' notorious The War of the Worlds radio broadcast and George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", with a tone and cast that's reminiscent of John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13".

Be sure to watch the end credits.

Highly Recommended

That's why I bought a copy from Amazon.ca, the DVD was released 7/21/09 (Netflix is slow getting some DVDs).

There were 4 copies on the new release shelf in blockbuster so I grabbed one yesterday. I plan on watching it tonight or tomorrow and from your description it sounds like something I will really enjoy, thanks for the review!

I just finished watching this, what a fantastic movie! Just when you think you've seen every possible angle on the increasingly worn out zombie genre! I agree with Airboss 100%, maybe not for everyone, dialogue heavy and really never stops building. Maybe a tad anti-climatic but such an excellent piece of work it doesn't distract from what has been built. Also be sure to watch/listen through the all the credits.

Looks like it is due out on bluray in Jan from amazon.uk and next month from amazon.de. I'm not sure if both are B locked but figured I'd share anyways.

Both of those are cheaper than what I paid for the SD DVD.

LoveFilm.com is showing it as Region B. Who knows, by the release day I may decide to double dip (or sell my SD DVD and go Blu).

I thought this was a truly unique horror movie. It was a great idea and I really enjoyed it up to the point where it kinda reminded me of Bug..which I didn't like, but that's just me. It's definitely, definitely, worth a look. Very enjoyable.

I'm glad this thread was resurrected as I rented this disc last night on its recommendations and was rewarded with a thinking man's 'undead' movie. Fine casting and acting all around (especially Stephen McHattie.) Much like "The Man From Earth" this movie required a back-to-back viewing to confirm what I just experienced.

Highly recommended!

Exactly Arcane. Two viewings are required to take it all in. I enjoy a good Zombie action flick as much as anyone else but the most terrifying aspect of THE zombie film "Night of the Living Dead' was the news broadcasts of what was happening. Pontypool plays into that beautifully. Did'nt see the credits so I'll catch it again tonight .

thanks airboss. A guy I work with came in saying his fiance had streamed a film he was sure I would like. Neither one of them could remember the name however. He had brief hints-zombies, canada, a disc jockey..this has got to be it...

Kind of slow, but the action almost never leaves the radio station, so there isn't a whole lot of places to run. Plus the way the "zombie disease" spreads is unique and gets through a lot of the barriers that would stop "normal" zombies.

Although I should say, don't go into this film thinking it's a 28 days later/Night of the Living Dead thrill a minute ride. It's subtler than those films.

Wow, what a great film!
The tension is very high...to put it mildly.
I was on the edge of my seat.

EXTREMELY subversive and topical.
The general message is
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
words can be toxic and if used in a certain way can inspire the most heinous of violence.

But there is a multitude of other clever stuff to be enjoyed here too.

The acting and writing (in particular) is first rate.
The BD has superb sound.

How the heck did this little gem not get more recognition?
Whoever is the creative force behind this movie is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

I came across this back in October during our horror fest 31 in 31 and I think Airboss and I were the only ones in the thread that had seen it. I was pushing it but I think others lists had been pretty dialed in by then and after Halloween was over horror took a back seat

Glad you liked it, going to watch my copy with the wife this weekend who has not seen it.

Blockbuster only has the dvd so that is in my queue. I much prefer bluray as I watch on a 120"+ screen but I watch plenty of horror flicks on dvd as most aren't on blu. More and more it is the lossless audio I miss over the better pic but it really should be about the content not the av.
