My brother in law said the same thing, it's his favorite. I own the DVD box set so ill have to check it out. Though they're all unopened so maybe I could sell it and put that towards the BR box set.
Just watched Skyfall and really liked it. I loved all the old references to the past films, just wish Connery was up to playing the part they had for him. He would've made that character better. Liked that they delved into Bond's past, that was cool. Maybe they'll do more in the future. The end really made me smile as I figured it out just before the character's reveal. My wife didn't get it b/c she hasn't seen but a few of the movies so I guess we have some work to do smile.gif
As much as I love the older movies, I really like Craig and the way they portray Bond as more real and gritty yet still suave with less campiness.

That's a myth. The role was not written for Connery. His presense would have been a huge distraction in the movie.

Yes, that. I was literally snowed in. All my doors were blocked. I had to climb out a basement window onto the driveway.

Wow, my son was luckier than you. He lives in New Jersey but works in Midtown. He said he had no trouble getting out of his apartment, the trains were still operating, and his stop is only a couple of blocks from his office. Better yet, he left on a business trip to Germany on Monday and so will be away until, he hopes, the worst is over.

I think they might have received the brunt of the storm.

Sometimes I still wishI lived in Denver where I could get all four seasons in one day! And so I could watch the prairie dogs, those little guys are funny.

Technically, we all live east of the Rockies, more or less.

As for Connery in Skyfall. It wouldn't have worked as Josh said. Never let the viewer focus on the wrong character.

Albert Finney's part. But here's what Sam Mendes had to say about this story: "There was a definite discussion about that -- way, way early on,” Mendes explains. “But I think that's problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too ... it would take you out of the movie. Connery is Bond and he's not going to come back as another character. It's like, he's been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract.”"

So it turns out, and I was wrong too cause I thought they approached him, that they simply considered the idea but actually never talked to Sean Connery. He was never supposed to play anything in the movie. Mendes (and Josh a few posts back) is right it would have been very awkward to have this "007 vs. 007" thing. While it is an entertaining idea considering it's the 50th anniversary, it wouldn't have been the smartest move.

The problem with casting Albert Finney was that as soon as he appeared I thought Jason Bourne. And if including Sean Connery would have taken us out of Skyfall why include the Aston-Martin which does exactly that?

I watched my Blu-ray copy last night for the first time and the PQ and AQ were excellent but the villain and plot holes still come up wanting. Just my opinion, I know everyone here loves this movie.

I thought they should've just taken out the line about the ejection seat and implied the car be was the one he won in Casino Royale. Not that knowledgeable about fancy cars, so I don't know if they're different models, but they look the same to me...

Good point on Finney. I want to say they made the villain look silly in this, but when you go back to a couple of Blofelds or Kananga, I guess it's
not an issue. Exposing themselves out in the middle of nowhere? I don't know about that.

Oh, and how can a 50 Year Old McCallan be anyone's favorite? You can't get it enough times to get used to it. Oh wait.....

So for uninformed types like myself, what was the car that he won in the poker game in Casino Royale? Was it a different year or something from the one in Skyfall?

They are the same but nothing confirms in Skyfall that the DB5 is the one from Casino Royale that Bond won in a poker game. The Skyfall DB5 to me is just an homage to the Goldfinger Aston... Nothing more nothing less.

I realize there was nothing in Skyfall connecting the Casino Royale car (especially since there was reference to the ejector seat), but the reason I ask is iamian's post suggesting if I knew more about cars I wouldn't have thought they were even similar.

I'm embarrassed to say, I completely forgot about this car in Casino Royale. But that being the case, then the question becomes, why pay an homage to Goldfinger a second time?

This speaks to my point about the tone of Skyfall when I posted after viewing in the theater. It felt almost like a reboot but in the most subtle ways, which I felt it made sense because of the way QoS turned out. When they first showed the car in Casino, I immediately got the connection. But when they showed it in Skyfall, I again made the connection back to Goldfinger. But now that I think about it, the connection (or reconnection) was with M's question about the ejector seat. The car itself (in Skyfall) is the tie-in to Casino Royale IMO.

I meant everyone should have recognized it as reference to Goldfinger. DB5 in Casino had steering wheel on the wrong side.

As someone who saw Dr.No ,From Russia With Love and Goldfinger in high school, Im not as enthusiastic about the direction the new bond films have been heading.Gritty, realistic and plausible Bond films are staring to resemble the Bourne saga. Now this is not a totally bad thing and yes, the first 20 minutes of Skyfall were jaw dropping but just not the magic of the old Bond.Perhaps Im in the minority here but I remember what an event a new bond film was for the baby boomer generation. Not only was Bond a completely different kind of hero, the technology on screen had so much WOW factor in it that you were instantly propelled out of the gritty fifties into that unimaginable world of easily attainable women, death defying action and that all important sly sense of humor that kept you going back to revisit the film in case you missed something.
I think Bond is played by the right man for this age but the script needs to bring back the WOW factor to the plots. No I dont mean a superhero film but I do remember how i felt when Bond first used his jetpack and i want that feeling back. The hell with realism,we have enough of it in cinema, lets try to shock the audience with something new beyond everyone but bonds capabilities.

Because the DB5 is the most recognizable and famous Bond car?

In Casino Royale it was just an ordinary DB5 (if there's such a thing wink.gif), but in Skyfall, it's a clear reference to Goldfinger, it even has the same license plate "BMT 216A" and of course the gadgets.

It seemed pretty clear to me that it's not the same car as the one in Casino Royale - it's the car from Goldfinger. As Morpheo pointed out above, the car he won in Casino Royale was just a typical Aston Martin, where the one in Skyfall was outfitted with the same upgrades that the car in Goldfinger had (it was bullet-proof and had machine guns and an ejector seat.) It has the same license plate number from Goldfinger. They even played the classic theme during the reveal.

I don't know - to me it was an obvious nod/tie-in to the Goldfinger Aston Martin.
