While I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, I left the theater kind of wishing that Fincher was dedicating his time to something else. I mean, these novels were made into a movie trilogy just a couple of years ago. Why the need for another remake? Now there's two more for them to go before Fincher moves on to something else. That bums me out.

+1,000,000

that really says just how exceptional the original novels are, and how well both cinematic versions were done.

kudos to all!!!

posted this on br thread but there seems to be a lot more activity here.

maybe someone here can help me figure this odd situation out.

rented this in br format from redbox over the weekend.

come home and start watching it and minutes after the film started i notice the pq was quite soft and lacked the punch i usually see on a br transfer.

the prior posts indicate, i believe, the u.s. br release is a quality transfer, but what i saw on the screen was very low tier in terms of pq.

i pulled the disc out and there was no br logo anywhere. started the film up from the beginning again and nothing in the opening credits indicates it is a br.

i don't have the equip to test the disc, but to my eyes, this was either or poor br transfer or someone (possible prior renter) swapped a br copy out with an sd dvd.

am i missing something here?

There should be some kind of display button on your remote to show the details of the disc. You said no Bluray logo on the disc, is there a DVD logo?

didn't look for dvd logo but definitely no br. already returned dics to redbox. called them to complain and they gave me credit so no harm done other than i will have to rent again to verify if i got a dvd instead of br.

given that most here have posted this is a decent quality transfer, i'm pretty sure it had to be a dvd based on what these once discerning eyes could see.

I have to agree...Fincher is a fine filmmaker and should go beyond re-makes to earn a buck.

And the Swedish films are just fine (IMO).

From a technical point of view it isnt a remake when its based the orginal book and not the previous movie.

Is Peter Jacksons LOTR considered a remake?

But if there was a need for a English version of Dragon tattoo is of course another question. But from my point of view we always have a need for good movies. And I rather take a remake of Dragon tattoo then another CGI infested super hero movie.

For the record I havnt seen the movie yet.

Good movies are as rare as an on topic discussion.

I'd rather see more original ideas from Hollywood personally. It seems like 90% of what we get is super heros and re-visioned foreign films that were mostly better before. This is why Prometheus remains at the top of my most anticipated film of 2012 list. Lincoln and Bourne Legacy close behind.

Well...OK, you have a point.

I guess that really is THE question...
Most (including myself) have felt the original trilogy did justice to the source.

Of course, there is always room for disagreement...

I haven't rent the film so I don't know if the discs are different from the ones you buy... However I bought the 3disc Blu-ray and on disc 1 and 2 there's a tiny Blu-ray logo on them, while the dvd is made like it was a burned disc with the title written with a sharpie... fwiw the Blu-ray looks fantastic.

I know many fans may have not liked the 3rd Alien movie much, but I have always enjoyed it, mostly due to Fincher returning to a more Ridley Scott mood after Cameron's action extravaganza. Although due to his experiences on set, it seems Fincher would like us to forget he helmed the film.

I think I understand why Fincher decided to undertake his own version of the Millennium franchise: Lisbeth Salander. Lisbeth is mesmerizing, an incredibly compelling literary character, not to mention a unique one. I think that's why I was so pleased with his Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Lisbeth is such a rich character, there was a lot more ore to be mined from her story, despite the existence of the Swedish version of the story. Bring on The Girl Who Played With Fire!

I'm with you. I've seen it twice and it was a long time ago. But I remember I liked it, and mostly due to the presence of Charles Dance (who is also Tywin Lannister in Games Of Thrones btw). Now that I have the anthology I think it's time to revisit this infamous 3rd Alien film

Just imagine if The Beatles had gotten their way around 1969 & were able to produce/score/star in a LOTR movie that they tried to convince Stanley Kubrick to direct!!

Would Ringo have been a hobbit, elf or dwarf?

I refuse to even think about the idea of a film starring the Beatles and directed by Stanley Kubrick, for this way lies madness.
