Alien conspiracy theorists rejoice! This may be the best evidence so far that you're right...

Wow! All I can say is Wow! (and boy I do mean Wow!)

This thread is still going? I was very active in this thread waaay back in 04 and for years. But at some point I think I temporarily hit mute. Then time passed and I forgot about it.

And now here IT is!

Now, you know what this means? This thing is like a time machine. I am going to have to find my leaving off point, read all the way through to the present...
Oh my no, this is not good. What have you guys been doing all this time? (No wait don't tell me, I'll just see for myself )

It's a fun academic exercise, but sending probes there is probably a waste of time. One of these days, somebody is going to figure out how to determine if any of these exoplanets have a magnetic field. Because without one to deflect away its home star's radiation and protect its atmosphere, life is unlikely to even get started, liquid water or no. That would eliminate a whole lot of the possible suspects.

This cannot be the Time Machine thread without Robert Wood. And Dean Roddey. And.. that's the real conspiracy, where are those guys? And the other regulars?

Dunno if this has anything to do with the above, but it's mighty strange. How do you just "lose" 500 head of cattle?

Interesting point.

We know very little though about the true origins of life, esp. on alien worlds. What's interesting about this discovery is that it suggests that earth-like planets are possibly more common in the universe than previously thought. If the system of Sol and it's closest neighbor Proxima Centauri both have them, then they must not be that unusual, at least in our region of the galaxy.

I wouldn't bet the house there's life on Proxima b. But I'm in favor of checkin the place out.

This should be obvious. They left because the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Well now. This is weird. Not just the lengthening of telomeres during prolonged space flight, but how they returned to normal length after his return to earth. Might venturing out into the cosmos be the secret to living forever?

Less people to stress you out, so yes I would say that is the secret to living forever!

He's coming to Charlotte to give a talk at Queen's College in a few weeks. I'm going to try and score a ticket or two!

Coincidentally, that's the very same place I heard Carl Sagan give a talk, some 30+ years ago. Not about astronomy, but about some alarming data he'd noticed about global temperature rise in the previous few decades, a rise he saw going logarithmic (yes, even back then). He called himself and the few other scientists at the time who were starting to talk about it "canaries in the coal mine". He was a true scientist, in its purest sense.
