The 1977 theme is just one theme among others, not "THE timeless and obligatory superman theme". That's what I meant and nothing more. When you look at Star Wars it's different because there's continuity, same for Indiana Jones. Everything that has been rebooted at some point kind of has to use different music, which is, imo, part of the "reboot" thing. In Star Trek (Abrams'), the original theme was there only as an homage, but wasn't used in the film, unless I'm mistaken. Back to Superman, I don't think Hans Zimmer will use any of the previous musical elements, that's just not how he works, which I agree with. New director, new actors, new origin story, new music - seems logical. If anything, we'll be introduced to a complete new "man of steel theme".

Same with Batman, be it the campy 60s surf-tinged tune of the Adam West years, the Elfman score used in Burton's films (and IIRC to some extent in Joel Schumaker's followups) and Zimmer's work w/ Nolan's trilogy. All existed in different worlds, despite having a character in common.

Exactly. Did anyone miss the 60s tune in TDK? ...I didn't think so. wink.gif

To play the other side of this debate, take the Bond series. It is the longest running film series in existence. It has gone thru a reboot to some extent each time a new actor takes on the 007 role, w/ the Daniel Craig films perhaps being the biggest reboot in the post-BOURNE era of spy thrillers. And yet, the familiar Bond theme has been used to some extent in the entire series.

But then, ask anyone to think of "spy music". Chances are, the Bond theme is the first thing they would think of (with Mission: Impossible probably a distant second). But the Bond theme - or at least variations on it - have become known as "spy music" in much the same manner that adhesive bandages, facial tissue or cotton swabs - regardless of brand/manufacturer - are almost universally referred to as Band-Aids, Kleenex, and Q-Tips.

One could argue that the first thought of "superhero music" might very well be the John Williams Superman theme.....or it could be the Batman TV series theme....or the Spider-Man cartoon theme...

While Bond gets altered to a point with each new actor, we are still dealing with the same MI6 agent. His basic story has not really altered that much. With Man of Steel, the story is starting from scratch, with a brand new take on the mythology & some potentially major changes to it. No need to recall what came before, as in the MoS universe - this stuff is "all new".

OK - I'm officially calling it as of 9:47am PDT.......the horse is dead. wink.gif

Okay, well whether the John Williams theme is in MoS or not, it's not like it's going to keep me from doing an opening night (preferably midnight) screening. I'm a big John Williams fan and I like his Superman theme; although, based on the trailers that I've seen to date I don't see how it fits with the apparent tone of MoS. I just want a good Supe story.

It will still feel odd without it... just like the new Star Wars will be without the 20th Century Fox logo and music that begins the fans going nuts before the main titles.

I loved J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek franchise and hope that Zack Snyder's Man of Steel can come close to matching its quality. If it does, we will all be in for a treat, it seems to me.

This reboot seems to have lost all the campy elements of all the previous Superman movies. Therfore, it wouldn't be fitting to use the Williams score. I love that score very much, but it just wouldn't fit this movie. I do think Elfman's Batman score would have worked in TDK, because of its dark tone that fit the movie's mood, but the two needed to be separate. That's just the way things are.

Bond's theme is different. The reboot kept the same essential thematic elements as the Connery films and just brought them into the 21st century.

In MoS, Clark won't be a bumbling clown. A big departure from all of the other films. No Daily Planet or secret identity either. Williams' score is associated with all of those things. I don't see it working.

I agree that there are dangers in jettisoning every aspect of the previous entries in a franchise for a reboot and agree with you that such a course is fraught with danger. Still, given the 9 years age difference between Henry Cavill, as Superman, and Amy Adams, as Lois Lane, I am encouraged to think it likely that there won't be a romance between the two. I also wouldn't mind seeing Clark Kent's bumbling doofus pose go away. The bottom line is that I still have a lot of hope for Man of Steel

Honestly, I don't see much age difference in the look of age between the two. In fact, I think there's something sexy about Amy Adams. Maybe they'll be able to deliver a proper romance between the two. I do find Nolan is not the best at writing convincing romance, but here's hoping.

Wrong. There is a scene of Clark putting on the glasses as he goes up one of the elevators at The Daily Planet.

I love Amy Adams but think she is far to old to play a convincing love interest for Cavill who is 9 years her junior. My opinion is informed by the horrible miscasting of Reese Witherspoon opposite Robert Pattinson, who is 10 years her junior, in Water for Elephants. I just don't think that sort of thing works if the age discrepancy is not credibly explained. Maybe Man of Steel will do that but it seems to me the best solution would to ignore the romance angle altogether.

Yeah, I'm not understanding that kind of criticism. Some people look old at 25, some young at 45. Depends on the individual, how well they've taken care of themselves, good make-up artists, and especially, good genes.

No to mention their maturity. And while Adams may be a little older she still has a youthful charm to her. Hollywood has been doing this for years with everyone from Judy Garland (Wizard of Oz) to Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid). There are people that can pass for or play older or younger in roles where there age actually matters. So I have to believe in MoS where age doesn't matter it will be an even less significant issue. And again, in my opinion, even if it is obvious it doesn't matter to me in the least as long as the relationship is (or is portrayed) as genuine.

Here is an article about Hans Zimmer's score with preview clips available for those interested. Looks like the choice is to go a whole new direction.

Amazon has since pulled the audio clips, so you can see the track names but not hear the 30-second preview.

The deluxe edition looks to have an interesting bonus:

"The deluxe edition will be housed in a special embossed steel case, contain 24 score selections, and give fans the ability to access multiple videos showing an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the music.

"Those fans who purchase the CD version of the deluxe edition will have the opportunity to download all 24 songs in DTS Headphone: X, which reproduces a cinematic multi-speaker surround sound experience using only the user's headphones. DTS Headphone:X presents a whole new way to hear mobile entertainment over headphones. The technology garnered rave reviews from the likes of The Wall Street Journal, and Cnet, among others at this year s CES convention."
