And, again as usual, I'm the last to see it, but I watched this last night. I didn't know what to expect but I thought it was well done and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I don't see it 'condoning' anything really. He knows what what the dangers are and experienced them, but ultimately decided that some risk was worth the reward. I think a lot of people would for this type of drug. I might well myself.
Of course in reality it wouldn't be worth it after a certain point because it would become more widely available (even if only among the competitors at that level) and using it wouldn't be such an edge. Demand would be massive and prices would plumme and it would be produced and sold illegally if the prices didn't plummet. But, though taking it wouldn't be an advantage anymore, not taking it would be a huge disadvantage. Talk about the perfect drug for the pharma industry.
The fact that he's the world's smartest man (though he's not since others are taking it as well), doesn't mean he's immune to distraction by all of the new opportunities presenting themselves to him. So I don't see the above as that big a plot hole. It's not like his grasp of the mechanics of day to day life are enhanced by the pill.
