ok so i just upgraded my center and front speakers, receiver, and bought a bluray player. I love movies with rain scenes and scenes where glass breaks and it sounds like it is all around you. I guess i like these surround sounds b/c it is what was played the first time I heard a real home theater. Like 10 years ago, I got a demo in about a $100,000 home theater and they played a rain scene and it felt like the rain was literally hitting the seat beside me. So Ive been striving for comparable surround sound ever since (of course on a way lower budget!!)

So my question is what are the best movies with scenes that have really realistic rain or glass breaking in them??

Identity is the first movie that comes to mind for rain. Tons in that movie.

First thought on glass breakage is Harry Potter 5...the battle scene at the end between Voldemort and Dumbledore.

Hope that helps.

Open Range had a really great thunderstorm scene as I recall (and fantastic gunshots). This is only the DTS DVD, I'm not aware if it's available on BD.

thanks ill have to try these. i think the one they used during the demo was forrest gump when he was in the army and it was raining, but i cant remember. I just got my bluray player and new receiver and it made a crazy difference. so now im trying to get some of my favorite movies on bluray. I watched inception last night and it has a rain scene in it that sounded pretty good, but i think when i upgrade my rear surround speakers it will sound awsome. im just using some rca satelites that came in a htib for back surround right now. they sounded better after running the audyssey but i can tell they are still lacking (not in volume but sound)

"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" has a fine sound mix, including plenty of water splashing around the listener.

I'll never forget when I first got a DVD Player and hearing glass breaking in 'The Negotiator'.

Not sure how that scene stands up now, but it was fantastic 10+ years ago when showing my father and friends (most of whom went out to buy DVD players and surround sound after hearing it).

The first "Superman" movie (w/Christopher Reeves) has a very good "glass-breaking" scene during the destruction of Krypton in the beginning of the movie. Haven't seen/heard it in a while, but I remember it sounding like glass falling all around me.

There's a good glass breaking seen in the begining of Kill Bill. The two chicks fighting with a glass table getting smashed.

There are other surround effects that can cause you to exclaim "Wow!". For example, the jungle noises in the Vietnam scenes in Forest Gump. Similar remarks about the jungle scenes in Avatar. Try and see if you can tell the difference between the live recorded jungle and the complete artificial mix of the animated jungle.

If you have a great subwoofer, two of my favorite surround soundtracks for a bass demo are the depth charge attacks in U-571 and the inital spacecraft crash scene in Pitch Black (especially the DTS version).

The sound is fairly simple, but the most memorable 'breaking glass' scene I can think of is in Blade Runner when one of the replicants is running and falling through several windows of plate glass in slow motion. Visually amazing though.

Do the visuals have to be real or can they be CGI?

Surprised no one has mentioned the obvious:

Blade Runner in TrueHD, right after Deckard shot Zora, and she's busting through the windows, until the last window breaks...then you get a slow-mo sounding glass breaking and shattering that sounds absolutely pristine.

Damn. Masterpiece. AND, it sounds gorgeous.

p.s. — there's rain all in Blade Runner as well if you want rain.

For video, there is a cool rain scene in the animated Owls of Gahoole. Slowed down so you can see every drop of rain falling.

I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned the first 5 minutes of Ratatouille on blu-ray. Yes, it's animated, but you have rain, thunder, shotgun blasts, and glass breaking pretty much in one scene.

Voted up for weirdest thread title/request ever.

I second Jurassic Park (T-Rex scene) for rain FX. Among the best I've heard.

Old thread but a couple of good test scenes:

In the Matrix part II, the scene in the middle of the movie where all of the Merovingian (sp?) men shoot bullets at Neo. The bullets all fall to the floor and rattle. The best I have heard this was on a parasound system with Legacy audio speakers long ago.

Thunder/Rain scene: The scene where the priest discovers "The temple" in the Hugh Jackman movie, the Fountain.

Any other great rain scenes or a bluray that is nonstop rain? I would like some great scenes that might sound great with 11.2 channel.

Blazar!

The rain is pretty effective on the latest Riddick film, an example of surround sound being done right.
darthrsg likes this.

Titanic scene where the water breaks through the glass dome. DTS version on laser disc has the best sound track. Seems like there is a rain scene toward the end where Rose is standing on the rescue ship deck.

"Death Becomes Her", when Bruce Willis falls through the stained glass and into the pool. There are some scenes with rain in them too.

"Singin' in the Rain" for a rain scene.
