From the creator\\writer\\director of the original Saw comes a brand new horror film, with two excellent leads!

The helpers with their comic relief appeared at just the right point of the film, and I think their appearance added a lot to the structure of the film.

Immediately before their appearance, the film had a long crescendo of suspense and terror. The humor of the helpers allowed the audience to take a breath and notch the film down a bit before it started the longer crescendo to its climax.

Absolutely.

However, I think it was unnecessary.

This movie is a straight-ahead, traditional horror film.

The "humor" kinda jolts the viewer out of the movie a bit.

It was also the typical geek sparing one might find on one of those crews. Not exactly something you wouldn't find if you had a team like that in the house.

Agreed on both counts. Often this kind of sparring humanizes the characters and we then relate to them. Unfortunately, the execution was really botched and akward on this and did jolt me a little out of the movie because it was so amateurish. Ideally, the back and forth rapparte would have been smoother and we would have grown to like the helpers in stead of cringe at their conversation. Then, after we like them, they are violently killed off. Mwahaha!

You hit it on the head...exactly my thoughts on the subject.

I watched this over the weekend and I have not seen a finer horror film in some time. This movie is CREEPY and extremely well made. Excellent, excellent horror movie if the slasher/torture porn film is not your cup of tea.

Watched this last night and completely agree. The music and feel of this had me buzzed from the start. Saw 76, Hostel 39, Halloween 104, etc., etc., don’t interest me anymore. I can’t say when it was I lost interest in gore fests, but it’s this type of horror movie that I now prefer.

I was also struck by the oddity of the paranormal crew. At first they really bugged me, but then they were kind of funny. The snipping back and forth between the two reminded me of a married couple having a power struggle. Still, I would have preferred they be more serious considering the psychic and the rest of the tone was pretty intense. If I’m locked into the intensity of a horror movie, I prefer to stay there until the very end and watch a comedy afterward.

Rose Byrne is an attractive woman, but she needs to eat a whole cow and all of the potatoes in Idaho, smothered in gravy.

I would admit she isn't all that, but she needs to work and tubby females are a dime ah dozen.

This just fresh off the news:

A sequel to last year's Insidious is on the way with writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan returning, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

Details about the project are few at the moment, but the original starred Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson as a couple who learn that one of their children is possessed. The former talent is set to re-team with Wan for his next film, tentatively-titled The Conjuring. That film, which also stars Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor, is based on the "true" tale of another kind of haunting.

The Insidious sequel could shoot as early as this year and see a release in 2013.

I must be getting soft in my old age because I kind of enjoyed this one. Agree with the "LOUD NOISES" and the problem with the "Helpers".
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show) Mixing Poltergeist with The Frighteners is never a good idea. Completely changing the tone in the middle of the movie then try to change it back is a complete fail. Do writers add the silly distraction because they aren't confident in the scary material? Either go balls out horror (if you can) or make it a fun & spooky horror-comedy. This probably would have worked even better as a Drag Me to Hell/Frighteners mashup. What do I know though - it made $54m!

This just in:

Yesterday, FilmDistrict announced their plans for the sequel, INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2, which involves bringing back everyone - Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins - for next year's follow-up, with James Wan back behind the camera directing from another Leigh Whannell script. Ah... it's like they're putting the whole band back togeth
