Sucks, due to the movie I just finished book 3.

So sad how this went down. Wonder if there is a animated version of this somewhere?

Wife, daughter and I went to the last showing at our nearest IMAX 3D theater last night. Almost right away I wished i had opted for the 2D version and I had violated my own rule of avoiding 3D movies. This is not to say that it was lacking in 3Dishness, the depth of field was impressive in certain scenes, it was just my old complaint about the lack of brightness (and focus sometimes) when donning the 3D glasses.

After reading about this film bombing at the box-office I stopped reading this thread so I went in with lower expectations but still hoping to be entertained. The long and short of it is that we liked the movie and I will certainly add it to my Blu-ray collection and I think many people will. There is a lot of eye and sound candy, I thought the CGI was well done. My daughter remarked afterwards that the story seemed like a throw-back to an old-school film and understood why some of today's audiences were going in expecting one thing and getting another and then disliking the movie. It's not perfect but certainly not deserving of all of the criticism heaped on it and I am looking forward to screening the Blu-ray for friends and relatives who haven't seen it. Shame it didn't do better at the box-office, I would have liked to have seen the sequel. My 2 cents.

I read in the most recent Entertainment Weekly that this movie saw a roughly 1000% increase @ the box office the week prior. This was due to the fact that it was added to approx 170 drive in screens in the US as a double feature w/AVENGERS.

Smart move, Disney - and it certainly looks like the Marvel mash up has softened the financial blow to the Mouse House that was JOHN CARTER.

Although...I did not realize there were still 170-odd drive ins left.

well to be accurate, given the huge popularity of the avengers, you could add just about any crappy movie to show with it and it would do well.

I liked this movie too. I'm surprised it did so poorly. The LFE was pretty tame though.

Is the ending too much of a sequel hint or the film can stand on its own? Cause I'm not sure a sequel is in the works...wink.gif

It can stand on it's own, but it did leave a lingering question. I HAD to know the answer.
So I just went ahead and got and read the next 5 books. It was that much fun for me smile.gif

hmmmm.... After reading this thread and most of the comments in the Blu-ray forum I'm almost tempted by a blind buy. But it's that 'unfinished' feel I don't know.... Damn you disney!!! wink.gif

Watched the movie last night on BluRay. I was disappointed. Not because the movie was bad but because they made too many changes to the story line and to me the story was almost unrecognizable. They left so much out which i understand since its only a two hour movie, but the changes to John Carter and Dejah Thoris made them different characters than what I read in the book. While the priests exist in the original story, their role in the movie has been invented by the screen writer. I may be mistaken while John Carter was able to jump very high, they exaggerated what he could do. I know that a movie is usually never as good a s book and while I would say that the final Harry Potter book was better than the movie, the movie was close enough to give me the same thrill as the book. This John Carter movie is a pale comparison to the book.

It's been 45 years since I read a Princess of Mars. From my recollection, it was a short book, featured a similar introduction to the Tharks where he was introduced to Dejah Thoris, had some fights, rescued the DJ, made friends with Tars Tarkkas, then got involved with the City battles between Helium and the other warlords's. As the story developed it was pretty much JC chasing down someone, killing them, just missing the prize, then chasing them again. Not great literature. DJ was a Perils of Pauline goal after the first book. JC was a stoic, indomitable character, but a 2D characterature. ERB wrote these for a nickle a word in pulps until he started getting novels published.

My point is that if Stanton tried to follow the books more closely, there wasn't alot more there. He mined the best parts and made changes to the characters that (should have) worked better for modern audiences. I thought the changes made to the Therns and JCs entrance and exit/return to Barsoom were a total upgrade over death/mastering astral projection. The Threrns/Matai Shang became much more powerful and mysterious...a worthy opponent that would get richer if the films carried on.

Anyway, I don't understand your disappointment. It wasn't butchered and the source material is dated and needed a touch up. I would have been all over a couple of sequels.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

It's a lesson in marketing. You could have a really good movie, but if you don't present it to the masses in a way that gets hineys in the theater seats, you stand to lose your shirts.

Word of mouth works for a lot of things, but for big budgeted Hollywood pics, I think it's not enough anymore.

Watched the movie last night ,my wife and I both really enjoyed it. I'm not familiar with the ERB's Princess of Mars books, but this really reminded me of Flash Gordon. Plus it doesn't hurt that the princess is smoking hot!!

I think the marketing really dropped the ball on this movie, this could have had a decent box office run if it was named something other than just John Carter.. heck even 'Virginia' would have been a better title tongue.gif
I might add this to my collection once it drops below 10 bucks

People are such hypocrites...bashing this left and right before seeing it when it was out in theaters yet now it's the hottest thing in video stores as it is nearly impossible to find a rental copy...even on a weekday. I've been calling my local BB everyday and all copies are checked out since tue. Online NF and BB are very long wait. Whatever loss they had, I bet Disney is making it for it now on home video.

I had stashed away a book with two John Carter stories I had never read. So, I pulled it out and am reading The Gods of Mars, the followup to the Princess of Mars. And I'm thinking, "How could they fit all this into one film?!". Plus, I'm thoroughly entertained!! I'm so thankful John Carter was released and I decided to see it.

Just picked up the Blu-ray today.

Yeah, but AVENGERS didn't have the critical drubbing that JC had, so more folks were willing to see a nearly universally-lauded film. Plus, it had the advantage of familiarity
with the earlier films (not to mention the comic books going back decades). But a film that couldn't even muster the common-sense marketing of using the at-least somewhat familiar name of Edgar Rice Burroughs simply had folks going "Who the frell is John Carter and why should we care?" Even Spielberg/Lucas ( brand-names in-and-of themselves) didn't title their film "Indiana Jones." Even the JC posters were lousy, providing no sense of excitement.
