Okay, maybe I'm the only one, since I have zero background on anything about this movie... Every time I see the title, I think of the Noah Wyle character from the television show ER. It just makes everything else seem laughable.

My apologies to any true fans of where this idea was born. My 2 cents only...

This is a Stanton/Pixar production. Disney owns them, but Pixar hasn't whiffed yet.

I'm screening this today, but I'm not particularly looking forward to it. Looks like a cheap imitation of other films. Hopefully it surprises me.

Thanks to CGI we are in the center of a crapfest of stupid digitally created movies.

Pixar is one of the best CGI studios so hopefully they pull off a good movie.

You know your stuff. "Cheap" as in it doesn't look like they spent much money. "Imitation" as in the plot looks like it was lifted directly from 'Avatar' (earth man arrives on another world, falls for a princess, ends up leading the natives in battle).

"A Princess of Mars", the book "John Carter" is based on, fits your plot summary and was published in 1917. If there's an imitator, and I don't really think there is, it's "Avatar", not "John Carter".

Well, if recent history is any indication, the SciFi channel will start running the Antonio Sabato, Jr. version soon. Traci Lords played Dejah Thoris:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1531911/

...it was really, really bad, I fast-forwarded through most of it, looking for at least some neat special effects, and was disappointed.

Isn't that the Asylum version? You don't watch those movies for anything good, you watch them for the pure schlock value.

C'mon oink, if you don't support this I'll have to revoke your Immortal fan club card. Unleash your inner teen fantasist hungry for pulp fiction. It's what it's all about. JC is an indomintable hero who falls for the imcomparable Dejah Thoris (with too many clothes in this version), he's got a faithful Woola, a 12' tall green martian best friend and ends up becoming the greatest swordsman of two worlds...plus he can jump. How can it get any better than that.

There was a very good article on Andrew Stanton and the making of John Carter in the October 17, 2011 New Yorker (the one with the watercolor of St. Peter and Steve Jobs at the Pearly Gates (no pun intended) cover. "Second-Act Twist" is its name.

He seemed to have made it in the Pixar way, of lots of conferences and constant script tweaking. And various reshoots. There is lots of discussion in the article about how various Pixar animation films were constructed as well.

Disney had "of Mars" deleted from the title as science fiction films are apparently the kiss of death as far as female audiences are concerned. Disney is worried. At $250,000,000 budget they should be.

I don't understand why they put so much money in this. If we add advertising it must be beyond 300 millions easily. The film has no 'big names' attached to it, the character is not very popular (I can only speak for myself but I never heard that name before I saw the movie was being made - I'm sure I'm not the only one either), so I guess to break even they must make more or less 300 millions or even 400 worldwide? I hope they succeed but I think it's gonna be very difficult.

Rule of thumb is that a movie needs to gross 2.5 times its production budget to break even. So it will need to make $625 million.

Combine that with Disney's other bloated film based on another not-as-popular-as-they're-hoping character -- The Lone Ranger, which began production a couple weeks ago -- and Disney needs to gross over a billion dollars between two films just to break even.
