Vin Diesel's Riddick is Casting, Plot Details and SPOILERS

Quote:

After a whole lotta fits and starts, it seems as if Vin Diesel and director David Twohy's Riddick, their third movie in the Pitch Black franchise, is ready to go. (I suspect you can thank the monster box office of Fast Five for this.)

Over at Moviehole, they've gotten their hands on a list of some new characters that will be appearing in Riddick, including:

Boss Johns (father of Cole Hauser's Johns character from Pitch Black)
Santana (Boss Johns' right hand man)
the sexy female merc Dahl
The smug commander Krone

Funny, I love both but prefer Chronicles of Riddick by a large margin. Not sure why but it just hits the spot. I think part of it has to do with Colm Feore who I've found exceptionally creepy since Stephen King's Storm of the Century. I also think Karl Urban is convincing in almost any roll and played his part very well. I only wish we'd have seen some brawling between him and Riddick, would have been a good match up.

I will agree that the "theatrical" version of CoR sucks; it was very rushed and choppy. The Director's Cut slows the pace some and adds a few deleted scenes which makes it more cohesive. If done right, it'll be a prefect trilogy, IMO (quadrilogy, if you count the animated Dark Fury....but it's about as rushed as the theatrical CoR!).

"But I didn't do it...!"
"I knew you'd say that"...*BLAM!*

The constraints of a PG-13 strangled Chronicles of Riddick. Universal was spectacularly stupid to force an R rated franchise into PG-13 territory.

This series represents the only time I got an appreciation for a film series after playing one of its associated games. After playing Butcher Bay, I saw both Pitch Black and Chronicles from a completely different perspective.

I remember a time when COR was to be the first of a trilogy and Pitch Black was considered an origin story. During the promotion for COR, marketers called it a sequel and it stuck.

COR was awful, imo. Every scene just SCREAMED that it was filmed on a set, and the miniatures were just as apparent. None of the action was interesting, and most of the acting was over-the-top or just plain bad. The fact that a film like that followed up an excellent, tense, intriguing sci-fi like Pitch Black is a travesty.

The first one was more substantial than that, which is why the second film was such a disappointment.

Hmm, I always thought of Chronicles as being the more developed of the two, with Pitch being a more generic sci-fi, horror film. Kind of like the differences and progression of Mad Max and the later Road Warrior.

I've been hoping to see a sequel to Chronicles since the movie came out, and I've got high hopes for it. Then again, I also liked Thunderdome, so take it with a grain of salt.

COR was dull, dull, dull. Vin Diesel showed he has neither the charisma nor the acting ability to sustain a career as a star.

He did get "hot" there for awhile.
Unfortunately for him, it didn't hold too long.

I enjoyed the second movie but I couldn't get past the retarded names like Underverse, Necromonger and Furyan. That really ruined it for me.

Wow you guys are blowing my mind. The first film had worthwhile characters, a much better less-convoluted plot, better setting, suspense, mystery, a bit of horror and sci-fi, and a good ending. The second film was so cliched, cheesy, predictable, and just plain bad. It was like a night and day difference. You guys might as well say you preferred Transformers 2.

lol so true, but the first was unoriginal it seems to me. Seen that formula many times in sci-fi (same with the second I suppose), but I liked the more grandiose visuals/differing locales of COR. Pitch Black seems like some sort of Alien homage.

I didn't release COR was such a high budget movie. With disc sales, it may have broken even. I enjoyed both PB and COR although critically speaking I don't think either one was above average.

I wasn't a big fan of either film, but think PB is much better than CoR.

Like both films and CoR is one of my favorites. Agree with some of the cheesy wording, but I can look past that. I'd like to see Karl Urban reprise his role. It could be interesting in how the story progresses from Riddick having earned the throne. Sort of reminded me of the Arnold Conan sitting on the throne. Neither seem like the king type.
