I was a little surprised to see that the Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome Blu-ray is being released on June 4, 2013. I would have guessed that marketing would have held off until later this year.

FWIW the latest entry on Wikipedia:

Production

Filming finally began in July 2012 in Namibia, more than eighteen months late. The filming wrapped on December 17, over-budget and with studio Warner Bros having sent out an executive to put things back on track. Miller announced that they would be returning to Namibia for pick-ups in early 2013 and the rest of the year would be taken up by CGI work and the conversion to 3D before a Christmas or New Year release.

That Tom Hardy gets some neat roles these days! He got to be Bane in TDKR, and now he is in the new Mad Max. Anybody remember the bad guy to be the nemesis clone to Cpt Picard in Star Trek Nemesis? I never even knew that was Tom Hardy until recently looking over the bluray cover. I still cannot even reconcile that guy and the guy in TDKR are the same person.

I need your sweet love, Rosetta Stone girl!

I've just watched all three previous films and read all the trivia and wiki stuff and am excited for Fury Road. If it's is more like Mad Max 2 it will be winner for me. Thunderdome, which I love, is the weakest in the series. Miller has stated Fury Road is not a reboot but a sequel which I'm ok with. Various other outlets are calling it a reboot. The ideas seem to have been conceived after Thunderdome. If it carries the same "western" movie feel of the first two it would be hard to hate on it. It seems to be in the right hands.

I read in another thread that someone who's seen the film says it's NOT a sequel but a total reboot. It junks significant parts of the continuity from Mad Max and TRW, and also

Spoiler!

This isn't the Mad Max we're familiar with.

I'm guessing there are no Prius Hybrids in this.

Also no Mel. Gosh, you'd think they'd at least give him a cameo or something. Dude needs the work.

I'm not sure if he really needs the work, but it would have been nice to have him, like you say, even in a cameo. This film wouldn't have been made if Mel Gibson hadn't portrayed the character decades ago. You'd think Hollywood would cut him some slack by now...

...Also THR is talking about Fury Road being a "prequel".. Max is played by Tom Hardy, how can this be a prequel?

I guess that's where the "reboot" comes from. Looks like they're going to just skip over the pre-dystopian part of the story and get right into the post-apocalyptic desert mayhem. Which, let's face it, is what the fans want. We already know about Max and his history from the first movie in this series.

Actually, I read that part of the pre-dystopian part of the story IS covered, and changed. IOW, a different continuity.

From the looks of the promo materials they have up on Blu-ray.com, the new film takes place between the first one and The Road Warrior, since it appears he still has the V-8 Interceptor (or could he have acquired a different one? I'm not sure), and that the character is still dressed in the leather outfit from the first two outings. Based on these observations, I'd be more willing to think this was a side story than anything else.

One thing that does have me interested is that a former Mad Max player is in this one, albeit in a different role. Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played the Toecutter in the original, returns in the new film as the chief villain. I'd love to see what he looks like in this one.

The three prior Mad Max movies have very shaky continuity as it is. In many ways, The Road Warrior was already a reboot of Mad Max. This just appears to follow that trend.

My understanding is that George Miller considers this a sequel, not a start-over.

I read today Miller said it's a chase film. Pretty much sealed the deal for me being in. Media blackout engage.
