New action/drama/horror directed by relative newcomer Josh Trank.

Three friends who gain superpowers from a mysterious substance turn on one another when personal problems arise.

Watch this trailer.

Apparently this screenplay was on last year's Black List, and was written by John Landis' son -- Max.

Shiver me timbers! It looks like it could be something original from Hollywood! Trailer does look good. I do have one nit, but the movie isn't supposed to be believable.

If superpowers were to ever find their way into a young man, the result would probably be something more like you see in the trailers for this film than anything you’ve read in Marvel or DC Comics. Thats said, the film escalates into comic book tentpole action you might not expect from the budget-conscious first person structure. This definitely excites me.

Saw it last night. Overall, I really liked it a lot, and it's the closest thing to a live action Akira that we're likely to get.

There were issues though. I have no problem with the found footage way of shooting, as some seem to, and this movie was in no way similar to Cloverfield, Blair Witch, or Paranormal Activity, side from the way it was shot. So I understand the comparisons to those. Chronicle did take too long in getting to the meaty parts of the story, and special effects in some cases were representative of the relatively low budget. There were some cliches, but overall, as I said, I liked it a lot.

I LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although it dog-legs into silly mayhem in the homestretch, for a good portion of its quick 83-minute running time Chronicle is a quite clever boys-gone-wild-on-telekinetic-powers fantasy. Unquestionably endowed with the best special effects ever in a low-budget shaky-cam movie, this better-than-average teen item will hit high school guys right in the sweet spot, to ample commercial returns for Fox in all markets.

I didn't like it very much. Chief amongst the problems was too much Hayden Christensen-esque whining from one of the leads.

It also suffers a bit from "80s High School Movie Syndrome," where some of the students look damn near 30.

High concept on a low budget, and well executed. Some excellent sequences, but also some pacing issues overall (as lordcloud said, it does take a bit too long to get the meaty bits, and imo it doesn't spend enough time on them). Impressive debut film from Trank and first time feature screenwriter Max Landis. While it could've been better, it was still pretty good and well worth the watch.

Me, too. I was surprised that the movie was quite watchable. I was expecting less. If I could fly like they could, I wouldn't need the rest of the powers. smile.gif

My original post from AVS BD Review Forum a few months back:

Rented the DVD from a Redbox kiosk yesterday (all out of BD version). What this film is, is Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Carrie in "stealth mode".
Yes, we've seen this before, but it's a new spin on an old tale. What the film is not is, "end-of-the-world epic"; I'm glad they didn't overreach and try. It turns out fairly well-balanced and I enjoyed it. Perhaps the BD would've revealed some of the flaws of the CG, because it's not totally seamless on DVD. And for those complaining about the shakey-cam, did you notice how the "technique" improved with the "abilities"? That was addressed.

Chronicle (IMO) is a "one-off", a la Hancock; it really doesn't need a sequel. Though I would have preferred a little more backstory on the acquisition of their abilities. Maybe there'll be a DC later.

Anyways, definitely worth a rent, but unsure of replay value.

"But I didn't do it...!"

This film has replay value for me, I really enjoyed it. I do agree though it doesn't need a sequel it ended perfectly
