One of the biggest WTFs with this movie is why young Joe didn't team with old Joe to take out future and current threats?
He knew what his future would be and current life was (or should have known).
It was completely spelled out to him in black and white.
Instead he deliberately makes things worse for himself by being a knuckle-dragger.
Implausible at best, dumb at worst....and poor writing IMO.rolleyes.gif

Probably my one and only complaint about the story. Oh well, I still liked it.

Don't get me wrong, there is an awful lot to like in this movie.
Did I mention Emily Blunt?tongue.gif

Another bitch I have is the prosthetic device put on the young Joe to make him look more like Bruce Willis.
It's kinduva joke really.....
Obviously, they were concerned about making the 2 actors look similar.
And yet they didn't even bother to dye his hair Bruce's color?
Everyone knows he has brown hair.
OK, I guess it's an oversight by the filmmaker.
EXCEPT they repeat the very same mistake (in reverse) with Blunt's character.
Blunt has naturally dark hair, not brown/blond.
You know, the same as the kid in the movie who is supposed to be HER kid?!?

I dunno....maybe the makeup dept. didn't get the memo.rolleyes.gif

Bruce never showed him her photo in his pocket watch, so young Joe couldn't really know for certain.

But therein lies the "paradox". Future-dude already lived his life...he should've just taken the bullet. Now he's mucking about in the past trying to exterminate some threat which even if successful, doesn't guarantee the future won't be dramatically altered.

Thankfully, "Present-day dude" has the correct but unexpected reaction; he ends the cycle.

He didn't want his wife killed as the result of his being a former looper.
Essentially, if he could have killed the Rainmaker, it was likely he would never have had his loop closed...or at least it would have been delayed to the point he could have got outta Dodge before the Reapers showed up.

I agree it would've made more sense for them to team up. And I also agree with Joseph; "mom" makes all the difference here. I think Ms Blunt could persuade me, too. Anyway, there's not much original here, including the child's ability. Might've been a much better film if it was centered on him from the start.

Because then the movie becomes yet another tired Hollywood "buddy" movie, of course this time it's unique because the buddies are the same guy! rolleyes.gif

For all its problems, at least the writer attempted a different take/path from what we usually expect in terms of how the story unfolded. The solution you mention (not meant to be a hit at you) is exactly what most of us would expect, and therefore tired, hackneyed, and boring.

At least it would have been more logical.
The trick with making movies (and sci-fis in particular) is to NOT attack the viewer's Suspension of Disbelief with a sledge hammer.
The very best movies suck you in and give you something to think about later.

Personally, I didn't mean team-up as in Starsky & Hutch. I meant having "old Joe" convince/mentor his younger self on how to defeat Rainmaker and what to expect. Young Joe is a stubborn knucle-head, though. If I met my future self, I would listen intently on what I had to say.

Hmmm. This one worked on me. Gave me plenty to think about afterwards. I got sucked in, absolutely! Like I mentioned about a page back, I was in it and rooting for the older Joe up until he crossed the line. Very powerful. I guess I am easy to please when it comes to movies. *shrug*

"Looper" reminded me of something similiar so I went and dug up "A Stitch In Time" from the "New Outer Limits" series from '96. Quite frankly, I think it told a better time travel story in less time. wink.gif

The simplest and best post so far.

I’m with Scott; I liked it and went for the entire ride without stopping for repairs along the way.

I see a lot of people are upset that present Joe didn’t listen to future Joe. Maybe I grew up differently than anyone else, but I seldom recall anyone younger believing anyone older knew more than they did: past, present or future - as in listening to your parents. Besides, it’s a movie. If we demanded logic in all of our movies we wouldn’t have very many movies of any length, depth, or interest. Then we would be complaining about that.

My wife had the same response many others did when it came to killing the kids. I disagreed with her but this happened during the movie so we weren’t able to have a discussion. In a perfect world a better “scouting” job would have been nice but he wasn’t on a 3-week vacation; his future depended on it – immediately. Maybe this isn’t politically correct, but if you are going to kill my wife and ship me back to be killed and I know who you are; I’m taking you out. Crib, wheelchair, immature or mature brain, it is illogical to say you aren’t going to protect your own interest - your life.

I’d watch this again.

True, but old Joe isn't a parent, teacher, or uncle....it's Joe.

I don't think "logic" is too much to ask for from professional screenwriters.
