This next year is shaping up to be HUGE. Not only do we have the return of 3 incredible franchises and their iconic filmmakers (The Hobbit, Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises), but we have the amalgamation of many recently admired ones (The Avengers)! That is four impressive films for the year already, and add to that:

- "Django Unchained" from Tarantino
- "Gravity" from Alfonso Cuaron
- "Argo" from Ben Affleck
- The Hunger Games
- "Only God Forgives" from Nicolas Winding Refn reunited with Ryan Gosling
- "Cloud Atlas" from the Wachowskis
- "LOOPER" from Rian Johnson who collaborated with Shane Carruth ("Primer")
- "Lincoln" the highly anticipated biopic from Spielberg
- "The Master" from Paul Thomas Anderson
- "Seven Psychopaths" which reunites Martin McDonagh ("In Bruges") with Colin Farrell
- "Les Miserables" from Tom Hooper ("King's Speech")
- "Moonrise Kingdom" the latest from Wes Anderson
- "Wettest County" from John Hillcoat starring Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Guy Pearce
- "The Amazing Spider-man" franchise reboot from Marc Forster
- "The Great Gatsby" from Baz Luhrmann
- "James Bond: Skyfall" from Sam Mendes
- "Brave" is the new Pixar animated feature
- "Coriolanus" debut film from Ralph Fiennes
- "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" from Timur Bekmambetov ("Night Watch", "Day Watch")
- "The Bourne Legacy" from Tony Gilroy

Also, plenty that simply have potential like:
- "The Woman in Black" old school horror starring Daniel Radcliffe ('Harry Potter')
- "Red Tails" new historical action\\drama from Lucasfilm
- "John Carter" the over-budget fantasy epic from Andrew Stanton
- "Area 51" found-footage film from Oren Peli ("Paranormal Activity")
- Men In Black 3
- "The Dictator" new mockumentary from Sasha Baron Cohen
- "The Cabin in the Woods" horror written by Joss Whedon
- The Expendables 2
- "Dredd" new Judge Dredd film starring Karl Urban
- GI: Joe Retaliation
- "Taken 2" from Olivier Megaton
- Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax"
- "Ted" the first feature from 'Family Guy' helmer Seth McFarlane
- "chronicle" the exciting debut film from Josh Trank
- The currently untitled action thriller from Kathryn Bigelow about the capture\\death of Osama Bin Laden
- "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" from the Crank guys
- "Red Dawn" remake is the debut film from longtime stunt coordinator Dan Bradley
- "World War Z" also from Marc Forster and starring Brad Pitt
- "Underworld: Awakening" with Kate Beckinsale's backside in leather
- "Act of Valor" new military action drama starring active Navy Seals
- "47 Ronin" a samurai film starring Keanu Reeves

And that's just the announced ones with wide releases! If you came away from 2011 disappointed (that is unfortunate, check the 2011 movies thread for some suggestions), you can see that 2012 will more than make up for it! Which ones are you guys looking forward to the most?

My eyes are on Gravity with Bullock & Clooney,..which is very interesting because it's like is he trying to redeem himself from another deep space travel he did in the 90's Solaris?

And of course IMO the best director working now PTA with Master.

I don't know if it's safe to look forward to a movie because most dash your hopes when they finally arrive. Sort of like expecting that eharmony.com pick to look like Jessica Biel and instead, she looks like Roseanne Barr.

I see a lot of sequels.

2011 set a new record - 27. Will 2012 come close or even beat it?

On lwright's list, I counted eight sequels, a prequel, a remake, and what looked to be two reboots.

Sequels/prequels are OK by me, as long as they are up to the quality of the X-men and Planet of the Apes ditties we had in 2011.

Two films out of 27? That's not a good ratio.

They better do 40+ sequels so we can get three films worth watching. Assuming you like apes and mutants.

"Apes & Mutants" - sounds like a good title. Starring Russell Brand and Andy Dick no less.

Charley Sheen could play the Heavy....

Generally, I am not fond of the concept of re-makes.
But I can see where this could work, as long as the tone is much more hard-edged this time around with serious/bleak sci-fi.

With both Beckinsale and Biel in it, I know my tone will be hard, too.

Yeah, it's something like 13.5 sequels to get one good one. I'm not sitting through 13-14 crappy films this year.

What do you feel was lacking in the 1980 film that would necessitate a remake? It was a masterful telling of the story of a unique individual. How could it be improved upon? IMO a remake would never be as good. Of late, very few are.

...what I would like to see in the news is confirmation that Fincher is going to make the remaining parts of the Millennium US trilogy.

Just read about this one... a Formula One racing drama by Ron Howard, starring Chris Hemsworth, entitled "Rush". Not to be confused with the bike-courier action thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon called "Premium Rush" (by writer-turned-director David Koepp). Both of which should be on the list of 2012 films with potential.
