My wife wanted to see this film and since it was Mother's Day her wish was my command. She is a Johnny Depp fan. I've seen the trailer a few times so I was expecting a comedy which it was not. As I watched Depp's portrayal of Barnabas Collins his roles in Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd came to mind. There were many dark humor moments and a few laugh out loud bits but the second act seemed padded out and flat. There seemed to be a general lack of chemistry between the Depp and Eva Green characters that should have been driving the story and was needed to sell the entire premise. But it's a Tim Burton movie and my rules don't apply. I own a few Johnny Depp movies and would have to watch this again before deciding if it's worthy or not. I gave it a 7 and my wife gave it a 9 but she watched the original TV show back in the day.

Thank heavens my wife went away on business last weekend and has forgotten about this one. Most likely by the time she remembers, it'll be gone and I won't have to sit through it.

The studio is going to lose their shirt on this one.

Watched the BD last night.

First off, my wife's review:
PERFECTLY condenses the series into a single movie.
Best movie adaptation of a TV series EVER, with the signature Burton quirkiness.
Needless to say....she was a huge fan of the series way back when.

My review:
OK, so I don't remember much about the original show (other than it was slooooooow).

The main problem here is it looks like Burton vacillated in what he wanted this movie to be: comedy or horror?
In the past, he has pulled off this hybridization well (Mars Attacks!), but not so much here.

The strengths are humor, the sets, and Depp's terrific performance (one of his best cool.gif).

The last act focused more on the drama, which was, IMO, to the detriment of the movie.
However, I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the film....
