Some of my favorite music is female vocalist. I thought I'd post my favorites and see if anyone else has any to share. (youtube links just to get an idea, low quality)

Francesca Battistelli, beautiful beautiful

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbCfyZHSQbE&ob=av2e

Bliss, Wish you were here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f3KhR5oDC4

Those are probably my two favorites.

I'll see your thanks and raise you one for that exquisite intro to Lara Fabian. OMG, how did I miss this wonderful singer?!!? Her "Caruso" is astonishing. I'm in love...

Melissa Kaplan formerly of Splashdown is a personal favorite

I'm such a sucker for female vocals I have too many to list but others at the top of my list would be:

China Forbes - Pink Martini

Imelda May

The great Ella Fitzgerald

The Ditty Bops

Alison Krauss

ok, that's enough for now

My Rig

Many have tried; few have done as well. There have been many Mimi's, but Renata Tebaldi's is right at the top pulling those goose bumps out in her "Un bel di vedremo."

Another of my most favorites from the past, Nana Mouskouri, singing Autumn Leaves with the rarely included prelude. This song should never be sung without it, but most have never heard it sung as intended. She always sang the entire song whether in French or English judging from the versions I have heard. My early vinyl copy of her Autumn Leaves from the 60's is my favorite, but I cannot find a digital version.

I don't know if it is still true, but at one time Mouskouri was the top selling female singer of all time.

In terms of ones that can give me the chills, some more modern ones that some immediately to mind are:

1. Fiona Apple. The girl could seriously sing me to you know what. Anything off of Tidal to me is beautiful.

2. Sarah McLachlan

3. Jewel

4. Alanis Morrisette. Incredible pipes.

5. Mazzy Star (mentioned above.) Hope Sandoval is a serious artistic waif fantasy of mine.

6. Sia. Seriously underrated I think. Breathe Me is a particularly nice one, and the song she did with Zero Seven, Waiting Line, is gorgeous as well.

7. Natalie Imbruglia is gorgeous and did some great songs n the 90s.

8. Mia Doi Todd, which probably none of you will have heard of. She did a couple of really beautiful records as well back a while. Probably has continued but I'm not as up on them as those first ones.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt-t67DtVO4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEVLxsZMx10

9. Natalie Merchant

10. Regina Spektor

11. Vienna Teng. Her album "Dreaming Through the Noise" is gorgeous. This song is paritcularly nice (it has nothing to do with the video it's been put over here.) Listen to this one in full resolution on a nice system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14P72nLQmRI

12. Tori Amos. Her "Little Earthquakes" albums is still great to go back to.

13. Lisa Germano. She started out as John Mellencamp's fiddler then went out on her own. She does very personal and experimental stuff, but some of it is gorgeous.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoLMqGCHrwM

14. CocoRosie. I have been trying to get people hip to them for a while. There are two female vocalists in this case. They started off very primitive but some of their stuff is just amazing.

Francesca Gagnon...

Perhaps best known for her role in Cirque Du Soleil this woman has an amazing voice. NONE of the pop divas are even in the same league as her.

See link below ... takes a couple minutes to get to her singing but worth it...

Great list. Other than Natalie Merchant, not really familiar with the others further down. Fiona and Sarah absolutely give me chills. Another one I would add for sure is Holly Cole. I'm not sure if you're familiar with her, but she's mostly a jazz singer, but does explore other genres. She's Canadian and is big there and in Japan. She should be bigger in the states than she is. Enormous talent.

I would also add Joss Stone to the list. She's got more soul than any white girl since Janis Joplin and she's only 24, with five studio albums under her belt. Never mind that she's beautiful, free-spirited, and has an adorable personality. Among other things, she's currently in a supergroup with Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley (one of Bob's many children, but lesser known than his half-brother Ziggy), and A.H. Rahman (don't know him) called SuperHeavy.

EDIT: I would also add Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. Her renditions of "Blue Moon," "Sweet Jane," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" are riveting.

Yeh, I'm definitely aware of Joss Stone, and would be even if not for musical reasons. She was (and probably still is) a serious babe, and has pipes as good as her legs.

You should check out the Vienna Teng album I mentioend above. I'm sure you'd really love it. Oh, and also check out "Joan as Police Woman". She's a very interesting artist and some of her stuff is just seriously chill producing.
